BMW X3 30 xDrive M Sport Pro Test Drive Review – Class Dismissed

BMW X3 30 M Sport Front Three Quarters

There was a time when buying a BMW was fairly simple. You bought one not because of the tech gadgetry or the highest level of comfort, but because it drove better than almost everything else in the segment. The steering felt alive, and the chassis spoke to you. The engine always seemed eager for one more run down your favourite stretch of road. Then the world changed as car buyers suddenly wanted bigger screens, softer suspensions, more gadgets, and more comfort. Quite obviously, BMW quickly adapted. Many of their cars became more refined, more comfortable, and, in some cases (read: 3’er LWB), even a lot friendlier to chauffeur-driven use. But somewhere along the way, enthusiasts started asking a simple question.

Where did the BMW magic go? That question became particularly relevant with the latest-generation X3. It was bigger, roomier, and more luxurious than ever before, aligning with buyers’ expectations. Yet, to the purists, it lacked some of the sharpness that made previous BMWs so memorable. Enter the BMW X3 30 xDrive M Sport Pro. On paper, it is merely a more powerful petrol version with some M Sport goodies thrown in. Behind the wheel, however, it feels like BMW has been listening. And listening carefully.

The Looks Might Divide Opinions

Let’s get this out of the way. The new BMW X3 isn’t traditionally styled; at least not in the way older BMWs were. The design language feels heavily inspired by the larger BMW XM. Flat surfaces, an oversized grille, blacked-out detailing, and slim lighting signatures make it look far bolder than before.

Whether you love it or hate it will largely depend on your taste. Personally, the design started making more sense the longer I looked at the vehicle. The M Sport Pro package certainly helps. The gloss black treatment works well on lighter shades, but, personally, I like the mean, all-black look of the test unit you see on this page. The front bumper gains more visual aggression, and the black-on-black grille looks purposeful rather than excessive.

The biggest highlight, though, has to be the new 20-inch alloy wheels. Finished beautifully and paired with red brake calipers, they completely transform the SUV’s stance. Viewed from the rear three-quarter angle, the X3 suddenly looks like it means business. And that’s exactly what this version is all about.

Inside, The X3 Feels More Modern Than Ever

Step into the cabin and you immediately realise BMW has moved away from its traditional design philosophy. Gone are the conservative layouts of older BMWs. In their place is a much cleaner, more minimalistic environment. The first thing that grabs your attention is the curved display setup. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment display merge seamlessly into one large visual unit. Thankfully, BMW hasn’t sacrificed usability entirely. The instrument cluster remains easy to read and logically laid out. My favourite bit, though, is the very tasteful customisable ambient lights that jazz up the ambiance in the dark.

The new iDrive 9 software is an improvement as well. Menus feel more intuitive than before, and basic functions are easier to access. Strangely enough, pairing an iPhone to the infotainment unit isn’t the most seamless experience. Meanwhile, the steering wheel deserves special mention. It’s perfectly sized, beautifully sculpted, and instantly reminds you that this is still a driver’s car. Material quality is generally impressive. Soft-touch surfaces, ambient lighting elements, and tasteful contrast stitching create the premium atmosphere expected at this price point.

There are some disappointments, though. Certain plastic panels, particularly around the top of the dashboard and lower sections of the cabin, don’t quite meet the standards one expects from a BMW costing well north of โ‚น75 lakh. Nope, they’re not deal-breakers, but they are noticeable. Rear seat comfort will please Indian buyers.

BMW X3 30 M Sport Test Drive Review Rear Seat Space

Rear seat comfort will impress Indian luxury car buyers. Luxury SUVs in India are often experienced as much from the rear seat as from behind the steering wheel. And in today’s day and age, BMW understands this. The X3 has grown considerably, and the benefits are immediately evident. Rear seat space is generous. There is ample knee room, excellent headroom, and enough space to comfortably slide your feet underneath the front seats. The seats themselves are wonderfully supportive. Dense cushioning and excellent thigh support make long journeys genuinely comfortable. Rear passengers also get dedicated climate controls, sunshades, charging options, and adequate storage spaces. The only real compromise is the high transmission tunnel, which makes life a bit difficult for the unfortunate middle passenger.

The Engine Is Good. The Way It Delivers Performance Is Even Better.

Let’s talk numbers first. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 255 bhp and 400 Nm. There’s also mild-hybrid assistance from a 48V electrical system. BMW claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.3 seconds, which is impressive. But numbers alone don’t tell the full story. The real charm lies in how the X3 delivers that performance. Around town, it behaves like a perfectly civilised luxury SUV. The engine is smooth, refined, and remarkably easy to drive. The 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox deserves enormous credit here. Gearshifts are practically imperceptible in regular driving. Part-throttle responses are excellent, and the SUV glides effortlessly through urban environments. Fuel efficiency is another talking point. Stretching a litre to 14 kmpl is fairly easy on expressway speeds, unless, of course, you can’t keep the right foot itch at bay. But that’s only half the story. Sport model changes everything.

The moment you switch into Sport mode, the X3 reveals its true personality. Throttle responses sharpen noticeably. The gearbox becomes far more alert. Downshifts arrive instantly. And the entire SUV suddenly feels more eager. The engine doesn’t deliver its performance in one big explosive surge. Instead, it keeps building momentum as revs rise. The closer you get to the red line, the stronger the urge becomes to keep pushing. There is also a satisfyingly sporty soundtrack, much of which is amplified through the speakers. However, it sounds surprisingly convincing. More importantly, it adds genuine character to the driving experience. Launch control is available, too, and that claimed 0-100 km/h sprint figure is largely achievable in real-world conditions. Thankfully, BMW hasn’t made the SUV intimidating. The X3 feels quick rather than frightening, and that makes it far more usable every day. At 120 km/h, the engine spins at a relaxed 1,600 rpm. Cabin insulation is excellent, so much so that the idling of the motor is barely evident. Road noise is minimal, and the wind noise is highly suppressed.

Where this X3 Starts Feeling Like a Real BMW

Twisties are where this X3 truly outshines. BMW has made meaningful changes to the chassis and suspension setup for the M Sport Pro version. And you can feel them almost immediately. The adaptive dampers work beautifully. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system continues to favour a rear-biased 40:60 torque split. Combined with the staggered tyre setup, the result is tremendous grip. What impressed me most was the confidence this SUV inspires. You naturally find yourself carrying more speed into corners than you initially intended.

The steering is direct, the front end responds quickly, the chassis feels tied down, and the body roll is well-controlled. Only on particularly tight bends do you become truly aware of the size and weight of this vehicle. For the rest of the time, it simply feels composed and, of course, incredibly capable.

The X3 30 M Sport Pro isn’t as soft as the other versions. This SUV prioritises driver engagement, and as a result, there is a firmer edge to the ride. You feel road imperfections more clearly as they generate noticeable movement inside the cabin. The large 20-inch wheels certainly contribute to this. However, the suspension never feels harsh. There is enough compliance to absorb rough surfaces without becoming uncomfortable. The impressive part is how confidence-inspiring the X3 remains at speed. Even expansion joints at highway speeds fail to disturb the composure of this SUV. Straight-line stability is outstanding. This is one of those vehicles that effortlessly masks speed. You glance at the speedometer and realise you’re travelling much faster than you thought. And that’s perhaps the biggest compliment for a luxury SUV of this segment.

Verdict: The X3 You Should Actually Buy

BMW X3 30 M Sport Pro Test Drive Review Rear Three Quarters

The standard BMW X3 is a good luxury SUV, but the BMW X3 30 xDrive M Sport Pro is the one enthusiasts should be looking at. Yes, it costs โ‚น75 lakh, before insurance, road tax, et al. Yes, some interior plastics could have been better, and yes, the styling might not appeal across age groups. But once you get behind the wheel, most of those concerns begin to fade away. Because this feels like a proper BMW and certainly far from an SUV pretending to be sporty. It’s a genuine driver’s car. It’s an SUV that combines everyday usability, long-distance comfort, and engaging dynamics in a way very few SUVs manage. In a world where luxury SUVs have become increasingly isolated and digital, the BMW X3 30 xDrive M Sport Pro still involves the driver!
