Based on the buying trends of the past few months, most of the Indian buyers are preferring 100-110cc commuter motorcycles, instead of 125cc bikes.
The Indian market is broadly divided in 2 commuter motorcycle segment – 100cc and 125cc bikes. These bikes are priced under Rs 60,000, focused mainly for the purpose of fuel efficiency.
As we see, the fuel prices are increasing every day. This has resulted in more people preferring commuter motorcycles, mainly 100-110cc bikes. Bikes in this segment are very frugal, delivering mileage above 70 kmpl.
Moneycontrol report states that the demand for 100cc bikes is growing much higher than 125cc bikes. The trends show a steady fall in the demand for 125cc commuter bikes.

125cc bikes are more powerful and capable of higher speeds. The power figures differ by nearly 2-3 BHP, making a considerable difference in the top speed and cruising speed.
Usually, a 100cc bike is the most frugal while cruising at 50 km/hr, but a 125cc is comfortable at 65-70 km/hr. Higher cruising speed is appreciated for long highway commutes.
Sales of 125cc bikes declined by 8% on Y-o-Y basis, to 1.7 Million units for the April-January period. Usually the 125cc bikes deliver a mileage range between 55-65 kmpl.

On the other hand, the demand for 110cc bikes has soared up fast. The sales grew by 17%, for the same period, up to 7.14 Million units. 110cc commuters usually deliver above 70 kmpl, which in some cases go up to 90 kmpl.
Also, the budget factor comes into play here. Most of the 100-110cc commuters cost well under Rs 60,000 on-road. Whereas, 125cc bikes go up to Rs 70,000 on-road, easily.
The 125cc segment in India includes Honda CB Shine, Bajaj Discover 125, Bajaj V12, Hero Splendor Pro, Hero Glamour and Yamaha Saluto RX. TVS and Suzuki do not offer 125cc bikes.

Among these names, CB Shine and Splendor Pro are the only well-performing bikes. Other bikes manage merely a 1000-2000 unit per month or even less.
