First Bajaj-Triumph Motorcycle Coming This Year - Timeline Revealed

Bajaj-Triumph is all set to launch its first motorcycle in the Indian market. It is expected to come in in Autumn this year.

For the uninitiated, Bajaj Auto partnered with Triumph to develop new motorcycles for the Indian market. However, we still have not seen any models yet. The company has revealed that the work is going smoothly and the delay is due to some changes. However, we can expect the first bike from the joint project pretty soon. It will be launched in Autumn this year. A scrambler and a roadster have already been spotted on the Indian roads.

Bajaj-Triumph Motorcycle to be Produced at Chakan Plant

Bajaj Auto joined hands with KTM in 2007 when the company picked up a 14 percent stake in the Austrian brand. Now, it hopes to replicate the success story with Triumph Motorcycles. With the new partnership with the iconic British brand, the Indian giant plans to focus on the development of midsize motorcycles (250-750cc) for emerging markets like India and the ASEAN region. It also hopes to expand in Latin America in due course of time. The Chakan plant near Pune is the production powerhouse for brands like KTM, Husqvarna, and Triumph.

India is a growing market for adventure and sports bikes. Thanks to a rapidly growing bike culture, Indian customers are spending more on their bikes. This has helped many brands to introduce powerful and stylish brands in the Indian market. However, the biking community was disappointed to hear that KTM had shelved the plans to develop a new range of 490 cc motorcycles. A parallel twin makes perfect sense for Indian consumers as it offers good performance levels at a decent price.

New Lineup Expected to Include 250cc and 400cc Models

While KTM is unlikely to bring its high-end motorcycles to India anytime soon, the company CEO, Stefan Pierer shared some good news recently. He has confirmed that the Austrian brand is working on a new 650cc or 690cc range based on the 790cc parallel twin platform. The new bikes will likely be manufactured in India at Bajaj’s premises in India. While the launch will not happen in the next two years, we can expect to see a naked, a supersport, and an adv bike.

India will also be one of the first markets to get the new motorcycle model from the Bajaj-Triumph partnership. The Bajaj-Triumph lineup is expected to include 250cc and 400cc series bikes. Additionally, KTM is working on the next-generation Duke series. It is expected to hit the Indian shores in 2024. Stefan Pierer also explained the reasons behind shelving the 500 cc project after a long development phase.

“The 500 class, for me, is not an interesting category anymore, so we stopped the RC490 because we are bringing the 790 down a little bit. We’re talking about the 690 or 650 – and that’s better for marketing because more is always better than less! Also, its pricing is always an issue. It’s easier to make a satisfactory price tag with a 650 model compared to a 500. A 500 is an entry-level bike,” said Stefan Pierer, CEO, Chairman of the Executive Board of KTM AG.
