82-Year-Old Grandma Restores 50-Year-Old Jawa For Grandkids [Video]

In a heartwarming gesture, an 82-year-old grandma restored her husbandโ€™s 50-year-old and gifted it to her grandkids.

Indian people have a special connection with their automobiles. Many people still keep old scooters or bikes as they hold sentimental value for them. This is especially because of a long period when purchasing an automobile in India was a difficult task. Now, a 50-year-old Jawa bike has become the centre of a heartwarming gesture. An 82-year-old grandma restores her husband’s old motorcycle. She went through this exercise to gift the bike to her grandkids. This incident was captured on camera.

As you can see in the above YouTube video by Clutch and Gear, the grandmother holds a special place for the old bike. The Jawa motorcycle belonged to her husband who passed away years ago. Since then, it has stayed at her home. However, she wanted to gift this bike to her grandkids and this led to the comprehensive restoration project highlighted in the video. It is to be noted that the Jawa motorcycle is over 50 years old. The complete restoration of such an old bike is not as easy as it appears.

Restoration Pros and Cons

It is a common belief that restoring old automobiles or repairing unique models is a loss-making proposition as finding matching parts is an expensive process. Additionally, the labour costs are also quite high. The whole process might end up costing more than the finished vehicle itself. This is the reason rare bikes and cars are spotted on roadsides in terrible condition. However, many owners can’t put a price on an emotional connection and seeing an old vehicle in good condition can be worth the price tag. As you can see in the above video, the 82-year-old grandmother herself dropped the bike at the mechanic shop.

50-Year-Old Jawa Restoration Process

The above video highlights the restoration quite well. You can see that the technical team started with fixing the mechanical side. The bike is completely torn down to its chassis to allow the technicians to work on individual parts like the engine, wheel bearings, main handlebar, etc. This is done to ensure that the restored bike works properly for several years after the delivery.

As mentioned before, the most difficult part of the project was finding matching parts for this Jawa motorcycle. The repair team has to contact multiple vendors to procure these parts. Additionally, they had to re-chrome many deeply rusted parts and weld the deep rust holes. The team also added a new bottle green paint job to the parts before the final assembly. A Jawa logo was hand-painted on the tank. The final addition is a brand-new tan leather seat.

Overall, the restoration job is quite thorough and impressive. The team claims that they made sure the painted parts were buffed and polished. As a result, the bottle’s green paint job and the gold flakes are standing out. Once satisfied, the team delivered the bike to the owner’s home. As you can see, the whole family is extremely happy with the restoration job. The grandmother took part in a Pooja (ritual) of the bike. She looked quite impressed with the restored Jawa.
