Established on May 06, 1996, Hyundai Motor India Ltd has sold 12.7 million units including export of 3.7 million+ units to more than 150 countries
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has completed 29 years in the country, marking a key milestone in its journey since it was founded on May 6, 1996. Over this period, the company has sold 12.7 million vehicles in the Indian market, averaging 50 cars sold every hour over the last 29 years.
Strong Manufacturing Backbone
Hyundaiโs operations in India began with the setting up of its manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, in 1996. Production started in September 1998, making it Hyundai’s first fully integrated plant outside South Korea. Hyundai now plans to scale up capacity with the addition of the Talegaon facility, aiming for an annual production capacity of 1 million units in the near future.

From Santro to EVs
Hyundaiโs Indian portfolio has evolved significantlyโfrom the original Santro to popular models like the Creta, and now electric vehicles like the IONIQ 5. The company has played a key role in shaping the Indian passenger vehicle segment. Major Export Hub: Hyundai India has also exported over 3.7 million vehicles to 150+ countries. Milestones include:
- 0.5 million exports in 2008
- 1 million by 2010
- 2 million by 2014
- 3 million by 2020
The company continues to lead as the largest exporter of passenger cars from India since its entry. HMIL contributed 18.5% to Hyundai Motor Companyโs global sales in calendar year 2024. The Indian arm remains one of the top three markets for the global brand. As it enters its 30th year in India, Hyundai aims to strengthen its position with expanded production, sustainable practices, and a future-ready product lineup.
