In a strange experiment, Israeli scientists have trained Goldfish to drive robotic cars. This is not a joke!

Goldfish are known for short-term memory and living put their lives in a small bowl. They are usually the smallest fish in aquariums. Now, they have become part of a new bizarre experiment. Scientists are always pushing boundaries of the traditional way of doing things. Recently, Israeli scientists decided to test out a new way to drive vehicles. So far, many animals (dogs, cats, monkeys, and more) have been spotted driving cars and bikes. This time the smart people of Israel chose Goldfish. As a result, the tiny fish was able to control a vehicle. Let’s take a closer look!

The new training experiment was carried out by a team of researchers at Ben Gurion University. By the end, the goldfish was able to navigate and control the entire vehicle. The team developed the Fish Operated Vehicle (FOV) itself. It works quite differently from the usual ones we see in our daily life. The fish control the vehicle design thanks to a lidar system. It uses pulsated laser lights to assess data and operate accordingly to the movement of the fish. The fish is placed inside the tank and their movements are converted into the mechanical signal for the vehicle to move.

Six goldfish were trained by the researcher team at Ben Gurion University. The training process was completely based on positive reinforcement. It took approximately ten days to train each fish. By the end, the movement of the goldfish and the vehicle were the same, making the goldfish the driver of the vehicle. As per the recorded observations, the goldfish was able to react and adapt to navigate through the surroundings. The scientists claim that the innovative experiment further improves the driving technology.

Alongside training a goldfish to control a vehicle, the project also depends on specific components like microcomputers, electric motors, omnidirectional wheels, and a camera. Essentially, these components took care of the overall process of the movement of the vehicle. For example, the sensor above the tank scans the movement of the fish and sends it to the microprocessor. This data is then processed and sent to the respective motor as the movement is recorded by the sensor. The locomotion is taken care of by the omnidirectional wheels. tell us what you think of the new experiment.
