Jeep Compass Trailhawk

From the changes in the design to the new interior features, from the new engine options to all off-road goodies, here’s what you need to know about the Jeep Compass Trailhawk.

Jeep has finally unveiled the Compass Trailhawk here in India, and after all that waiting, it sure seems worth it. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk is the most capable off-roader in the country under the Rs. 30 lakh mark. If you don’t care about sheer size, then this Compass Trailhawk is all the SUV you will ever need. Here’s five most important things that you need to know about the Jeep Compass Trailhawk.

Engine and Gearbox
The Trailhawk debuts the diesel-automatic combination that Compass enthusiasts have been waiting for so long. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk gets a new 2.0-litre MultiJet Turbo II diesel engine which comes mated to a 9-speed torque converter unit. The new engine is already BS-VI compliant but it can also run fine on BS-IV fuel. The engine produces 170hp and 350Nm of peak torque. This engine gearbox combination will also make into the regular Compass very soon.

Off-road Goodies
The Trailhawk is thoroughly an off-road SUV. The Compass Trailhawk comes with re-profiled front and rear bumpers to improve the approach (26.5 degree) and departure (31.6 degree) angles. The breakover angle now stands at 21.2 degree. It gets a host of other off-road goodies which includes Jeep’s Active Drive 4×4 system, which is essentially a low-range gearbox, a rear locking differential, hill descent control and an additional Rock mode for the Selec-Terrain system.

The ground clearance is a full 27 mm higher than the regular compass, thus the car sits at 205 mm from the ground. The air intake has been set higher to improve the water wading capacity of the Trailhawk at 480 mm, up from the regular Jeep’s 405 mm. The suspension too has been reworked. Additionally, the Trailhawk also gets underbody skid plates and all-terrain Falken Wildpeak HT tyres (225/60-section).

Exterior Design
Visually, the Compass Trailhawk looks quite a bit different from the regular Compass. For starters, there’s new 17-inch dual tone alloy wheels which look rather impressive. The bonnet gets a matte black decal to prevent glaring and the 7-slotted grille, fog-lamp housings and the window line have a sophisticated gun metal finish to them.

The Trailhawk misses out on the red tow hooks on the front bumper that is available internationally. It is to comply with the government’s pedestrian safety standards which requires all cars to have smooth front bumpers. The rear bumper however gets the red tow hook we had seen earlier. The reworked bumpers also make it look more rugged and of course, there are the ‘Trail-Rated’ badges all around.

Interiors and Equipment
New to the Jeep Compass Trailhawk is a engine auto start-stop function, cruise control, 7.0-inch multi-info display and all-weather floor mats. It continues with the regular 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple and Android connectivity, auto climate control and keyless go. However, the panoramic sunroof is an optional extra.

To keep costs on check, Jeep has also subtracted few features that are offered in the Limited Plus trim and that includes a powered driver’s seat and auto headlamps and wipers. On the safety front, the Compass Trailhawk comes with six airbags, ABS, ESC, traction control, hill-start assist, electronic parking brake and reverse parking sensors and camera.

Price and Launch
The Jeep Compass Trailhawk is scheduled to launch in India by July, 2019. When launched, the Trailhawk will be priced around an estimated Rs 24.5 lakh (ex-showroom). It will sit right at the top of the Compass range.

At that money, the Jeep Compass comes quite close to much bigger SUVs like the Fortuner and the Endeavor. However, given the Compass’s success and level of equipment being offered on the Trailhawk, it is actually great value for money. And as said earlier, it is the best off-road vehicle you can buy in the country in under Rs. 30 lakhs. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk could very well be selling as hot cakes.
