Honda Amaze receives one-star rating for child occupancy

India made Honda Amaze has received a solid four-star crash test rating in the Global NCAP. Among the Amaze, there were other two cars as well, Toyota Avanza which received a four-star rating and Maruti Ignis was rated four stars.

Honda Amaze showed a fair safety performance for adult occupants but unsatisfactory result when it came to the safety of child occupancy. The compact sedan recently got CVT for the top end VX variant.

According to Global NCAP, the Amaze was tested at a speed of 64km/h for a full frontal crash while in India the speed is limited to just 56km/h. In the Global NCAP, a car is driven at 64km/h into a deformable barrier. A base variant of the Honda Amaze was used for testing and the vehicle structure and footwell area were reported secured.

The Amaze stood one star for child occupancy even when the child seats used were advised by Honda. Global NCAP also noted that Amaze offers a lap belt in the middle which makes it impossible to add the child restraint system (CRS). This ends up having lower protection than a 3-point seatbelt. The child dummies used showed head exposure and the probability of an injury when contacted with the interior of the car.

Honda Amaze offers dual safety airbags, seat-belt reminders for both driver and co-driver, over speed alert, rear parking sensors as compliance by the Indian safety norms.

Honda Amaze is currently available in two engine options, a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel motor. The petrol motor churns out 89bhp with 110Nm of torque. A choice of a manual or an automatic transmission is available with the car.

The diesel engine is available in two tuning setups in the diesel engine. For manual transmission, the car generates 99bhp with 200Nm of peak torque and the same engine produces less power and torque with the automatic transmission. It is limited to 79bhp and 160Nm of peak torque for the latter.

Honda Amaze starts at a price tag of Rs 5.90 lakh for the base variant and goes up to Rs 9.60 lakh for the top-end variant. The sub-4 metre compact sedans rival with the Maruti Dzire, Ford Aspire, Hyundai Xcent, Volkswagen Ameo and Tata Zest.
