Mahindra has launched the Signature Edition of Thar, which is basically a mild upgrade from the regular Thar. It now gets ABS as a standard fitment.

After being spied and teased for past few weeks, Mahindra has officially added the Signature Edition to the Thar lineup. Basically, it’s the last set of Thar that you can purchase before the current generation is officially discontinued.

The Signature Edition is priced at Rs 9.99 Lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). It mainly gets cosmetic upgrades on the outside as well as the inside. The most important addition is that it now gets ABS, making it safety compliant.

The production is limited to just 700 units. Once the units are completely sold, you would not get a brand new Mahindra Thar in the market till next year. That’s when the new Thar will be launched.

On the exterior, Mahindra Thar Signature Edition gets a blacked out front grille, brushed silver on the bumper, new 16-inch alloy wheels, ‘Thar 700’ badging and Mahindra CEO, Anand Mahindra’s signature.

It is also available in a new Aquamarine colour option, which makes it look more premium. On the inside, you get black leather seats with Thar branding near the headrest. So, basically, its just cosmetic changes.

As you guys know, the Thar DI diesel engine will be discontinued. Now, it will only come with a CRDe Diesel engine. The 2.5 Litre engine produces 107 BHP and 247 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

As earlier, it comes with the Borg Warner Transfer System with a low range gearbox as well. For better off-roading performance, it gets rear differential locking. It is the most affordable off-road oriented SUV in India.

Meanwhile, Mahindra has already started testing the 2020 Thar, which will get a major overhaul. The boxy design will be revised to make it compliant to the crash test norms. Also, a new engine will come on board, which will be BS-6 compliant.
