To power the new breed of EVs, the Indian auto giant has laid a strong foundation for cars, as well as batteries

Mahindra has revealed its new state-of-the-art EV manufacturing and battery assembly facility in Chakan. We know that the Indian car marque has been in the news with its two new electric sub-brands to sell EVs – XEV and BE. It has launched the XEV 9e and BE 6e coupe electric SUVs and even announced the prices of the base and top models. We will catch the two EVs at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 slated to occur between January 17 and January 22, 2025. For now, let us take a look at the details of this new plant.

Mahindra Unveils New EV Manufacturing Facility

As per the official press release, Mahindra has created a 2.83 sq.km. Chakan manufacturing hub. It is one of India’s largest greenfield projects which is a water-positive facility and relies on 100% renewable energy. This highlights Mahindra’s commitment towards sustainable manufacturing. This production hub is fully integrated and highly automated manufacturing ecosystem that leverages over 1,000 robots and multiple automated transfer systems. This is where the next-generation Electric Origin SUVs will be made.

This EV plant has a footprint of around 88,000 sq.m and uses a fully automated Press Shop, an AI-driven Body Shop and one of India’s most sophisticated robotic Paint Shops to optimize quality and efficiency. Furthermore, over 500 robots in the Body Shop are monitored via the IoT-based “Nerve Center” for real-time process insights and end-to-end traceability. Other critical components include Industry 4.0 tech, AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), and AGVs.

Battery Assembly Unit

It is one of the world’s most compact battery manufacturing lines. With Industry 4.0 tech, the plant is fully automated. For optimal insulation and geometric accuracy, the plant employs a patented pallet design. Additionally, for connectivity and performance, there is hidden cell terminal welding. Also, it performs a multi-layered end-of-line testing simulation of real-world conditions which is backed by IP67 ingress protection, automated anomaly isolation and real-time temperature monitoring. The no-fault-forward strategy ensures superior product quality and reliability. Clearly, the EV manufacturing and battery assembly unit is world-class.
