The Indo-Japanese car marque has been late to the EV party, but it is surely coming with all guns blazing
Days after the Maruti Escudo news broke, the latest spy video captures the electric iteration of the SUV. That is quite intriguing since we barely know enough details about the ICE avatar. All we know is that it might be similar to the Grand Vitara in terms of dimensions. However, it could come with 5- or 7-seat arrangement. The key difference is that the Escudo will retail via the Arena dealership of Maruti Suzuki, whereas the Grand Vitara is available in the Nexa showrooms.
Maruti eEscudo Spied Testing
The latest spy video stems from rushlane on Instagram. The visuals capture an uncamouflaged black Maruti Suzuki SUV plying on the busy road. While many of you might think this is the upcoming Escudo SUV, which will launch on September 3, looking closely at the nameplate on the bootlid reveals something rather interesting. There is an ‘e’ before the Escudo, which points to its electric credentials. We know that Maruti Suzuki names its EVs in that manner from the eVitara. Therefore, this is a clear sign that there will also be an electric iteration of the Escudo.
Furthermore, I believe that since the two will most likely be similar in terms of external appearance and interior layout, they will also borrow the connectivity and tech amenities. Therefore, you can expect the cabin to come with all the latest bells and whistles, including things like digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment display, 6 airbags, sunroof, automatic climate control, etc. More details will emerge in the coming days.
My View
In recent times, we have seen many carmakers launch new EVs in our market. Clearly, the EV space is expanding rapidly. Unfortunately, Maruti Suzuki is the only large car marque in India which doesn’t offer any electric car model until now. But all that is about to change with products like the eVitara and eEscudo. Let us see if these EVs are able to snatch the market share away from the competitors.
