The lifestyle off-roading segment in our market is heating up with the Maruti Jimny being the latest entrant to challenge the domination of Mahindra Thar.
The launch of the anticipated Maruti Jimny 5-door is a day away and we summarize all that we know about it. Jimny is a lightweight off-roader that has already made a name for itself in the international markets for the longest time. However, it has always been a 3-door version. India being a price-conscious market, people value practically. To address that, Maruti has introduced the 5-door version for the very first time. Mahindra Thar has dominated the market for a long time and its popularity is at an all-time high. Let us see if Jimny can snatch the market share away from the Indian SUV maker.
Maruti Jimny Exterior
On the outside, Jimny has a butch silhouette that includes retro round headlamps, chrome-plated vertical slats on the grille, rugged bumper with fog lamps, upright stance with the clamshell bonnet, massive wheel arches, alloy wheels with off-road tyres, plain side body profile, black side body cladding, tall boy stance, boot lid-mounted spare wheel, horizontally aligned taillamps, tough bumper and high-mounted stop light and more.

Regarding specs, it will have the 1.5-litre K15B naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 103 hp and 134 Nm of peak power and torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels via Suzuki’s trademark ALLGRIP PRO 4×4 drivetrain with a low-range transfer case and locking differential. It ensures that one could achieve incredible feats off the tarmac. It has a ground clearance of a decent 210 mm with a handy approach, break-over and departure angles. What We Think
Jimny already comes with a rich legacy and heritage from across the globe. But the 5-door iteration could be particularly interesting and popular among Indian buyers because it will offer practicality and a better value-for-money proposition. The off-roading prowess of the Jimny is quite impressive too, as we found in our review during the media driver. After the price announcement, things will become clearer. Jimny has already received over 30,000 bookings. The signs look promising.
