The MG Gloster will be powered by aย 2.0-litre, twin-turbo, four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 218hp and 480Nm of torque. The figures are notably higher than other ladder-frame SUVs in this segment.

MG Motors is all set to launch their third and perhaps their most important car of 2020 – the Gloster – this festive season and now, know what’s going to be under the hood. The MG Gloster will be the brand’s new flagship product in India and it will come with several novel features such as advanced driver assistance system, being one of them. It will also be far more luxurious than any of its rivals. The engine that’s under the hood of the MG Gloster is equally impressive as well.

The MG Gloster will be powered by aย 2.0-litre, twin-turbo, four-cylinder diesel engine in India. This engine has been developed in-house by SIAC, MGโ€™s parent company, and it produces 218hp and 480Nm of torque. The power and torque outputs are notably higher than all other body-on-frame SUVs of this size and segment –ย Ford Endeavourย (170hp, 420Nm),ย Toyota Fortunerย (177hp, 450Nm) andย Mahindra Alturas G4ย (181hp, 420Nm).

The MG Gloster will be a diesel-only SUV in India. While it was expected that MG motors would also offer a turbo-petrol engine option with the Gloster, a petrol engine is not on the cards for India. Although the Maxus D90 (the car the Gloster is based on) gets a petrol engine option abroad, MG Motors instead chose the most powerful diesel engine they had at their disposal for the Gloster. They believe this engine has the grunt to go with the Golster’s brawny appearance and premium positioning as comapred with other ladder-frame SUVs.ย

So this 2.0L twin-turbo diesel engine will be the only engine option for the Gloster at launch and it will come mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. There will even be paddle shifters as standard fitment. Also, as was revealed earlier, the Gloster will have on-demand four wheel drive system and it will even come with a terrain selection dial with four off-road modes – Mud, Snow, Sand and Rock – and two on-road modes – Eco and Sport – as well.

A new set of spy images last week also revealed the interiors of the MG Gloster. It is easily the most luxurious one we have seen in this segment with captain seats for the middle row with rear AC vents with dedicated controls. Some of the highlight features on the Gloster includes a โ€˜floatingโ€™ 12.3-inch touchscreen, a full-digital instruments screen, a yacht-style gear selector for the automatic transmission, a large panoramic sunroof, and hands-free tailgate opening. The third row on the Gloster is a bench seat with space for three.

Measuring 5,005mm in length, the Gloster will also be notably larger than all its competitors – Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour and the Mahindra Alturas G4. The MG Gloster is expected to hit showrooms in October this year and it is expected to be priced around Rs 40-45 lakhs for the top-spec variants. Yes, it will be significantly more expensive than its immediate rivals but its also way more premium and much more feature packed than what the competition has to offer.
