We keep coming across cases of people blindly following Google Maps and getting into precarious circumstances
In a rather shocking turn of events, a woman in Navi Mumbai ended up driving her Audi into a creek while she was using Google Maps. We use technology to make our lives easier. However, sometimes things go the other way. That is why it is important to use common sense and have manual control and not follow any app blindly. Let us delve into the specifics of this case.
Woman Drives Audi into Creek Using Google Maps
The details of this incident stem from timesofindia on Instagram. The visuals capture the horrific scenes from the Belapur creek in Navi Mumbai. As per the news report, the 29-year-old Shweta Sharma was travelling to Ulwe when she allegedly followed Google Maps onto the road leading to the creek jetty instead of driving over the bridge. However, the vehicle ended up falling into the 10-foot deep creek at around 1 AM. The details mention that it was pitch dark and raining heavily, which explains why she probably was not able to see the dead-end approaching.
Thankfully, she and her vehicle were rescued by the coastal security police team deployed at the jetty. As expected, the luxury SUV was pulled out of the water using a crane. Coastal Security Police Senior Inspector, Santosh Kane, said, “Instead of getting onto the Belapur creek bridge, she drove towards the service road, under the bridge, unaware that it was a dead-end towards the jetty. But before she could halt, the car plunged about 10 feet into the creek water.” When she came out of the car in the water, the Indian Rescue Team of Atal Setu pulled her onto a rescue boat.
My View
This is a classic case of how some people end up following Google Maps blindly. While I understand that the weather conditions made this incident worse due to relatively low visibility, it is the responsibility of the driver to always remain vigilant and act according to the road conditions. I have previously reported a few similar cases as well, where people drove according to Google Maps, but there were unforeseen obstacles on the road. Therefore, we must not follow the tech blindly and remain attentive at all times.
