New Tata Sierra EV Review – What We Like and What We Don’t

The electric SUV is the newest entrant into the Indian EV space and there’s a lot to discuss

In this post, we take a look a detailed review of the new Tata Sierra EV, including driving experience, pros and cons, amenities and safety. The Indian auto giant has revived the Sierra moniker by offering it in ICE and electric avatars. In fact, the EV segment in our market has been growing rather rapidly. Tata Motors remains the market leader when it comes to electric passenger vehicles. The list of models in its EV portfolio is also extensive. However, it continues to expand its range to make EVs accessible to an even wider range of potential customers. For now, let us check out what we think of the new Sierra EV.

Tata Sierra EV Review – Driving Impressions and Specs

As part of the media drive, I recently got the opportunity to test drive the Tata Sierra EV. There are a lot of things that stand out. In the most powerful settings, the inherent torque associated with EVs shines in the Sierra EV too. The acceleration is strong and the power delivery is also linear, which helps in overtaking other cars on the highways even at high speeds. Having said that, the performance builds up steadily, and the acceleration is not sudden. This means that the calibration feels mature and linear. For our roads, the 205 mm ground clearance, 6 terrain modes (Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock Crawl, Custom) and off-road assist play a huge role in enhancing on-road and off-road characteristics.

The Tata Sierra EV comes with two battery pack options – 63 kWh and 75 kWh. These are liquid-cooled, IP67-rated batteries. With the smaller unit, the electric SUV generates a decent 238 PS and 315 Nm, while the larger battery is available in two guises – single motor 209 PS / 315 Nm and a dual-motor quad-wheel-drive with 306 PS / 504 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. While the claimed range figures are often optimized, Tata claims a C75 real-world range of 440-460 km with the smaller battery and 510-530 km with the larger unit. Even in the QWD setup, these numbers are 480-500 km on a single charge. These are handy stats to lend confidence to buyers who want to take their vehicles out for long highway runs.

Furthermore, Tata Motors says that the DC fast chargers (above 110 kW and 261 A for the smaller and above 120 kW and 330 A with the larger battery) can offer charging from 20% to 80% in 26 minutes. With a regular 7.2 kW AC fast charger, the battery goes from 10% to 100% in 8.9 hours for a 63 kWh battery pack and 10.5 hours for a 75 kWh battery pack. In its most powerful settings, Tata Motors claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 5.8 seconds (in Boost mode), which is impressive for a vehicle of this size. To ensure the ride comfort of the passengers, the Ultra Glide suspension with Frequency Dependent Damping is offered. This ensures a great combination of plush and comfortable ride quality on bad surfaces, while maintaining a steady, composed posture and handling on highways and corners. In fact, that has been a key strength of many modern Tata SUVs. Finally, the battery gets a lifetime warranty (which actually means 15 years).

Tata Sierra EV Review – Variants and Price

The Tata Sierra EV comes in 5 variants – Pure, Pure S, Adventure, Empowered and Empowered A. The prices start at a rather enticing Rs 18.79 lakh and go up to Rs 24.79 lakh, ex-showroom. Note that for the QWD configuration on the top model, customers will need to pay an additional Rs 1.2 lakh, while to install a 7.2 kWh AC fast charger, owners will need to pay Rs 49,000 more. Tata Sierra EV Review – Interior, Features and Safety

This is one area where Tata Motors has been coming up with world-class vehicles in terms of modern amenities and tech functionalities. The kind of features and active and passive safety equipment Tata cars offer are truly impressive. In fact, the Tata Sierra EV boasts a full 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating in Adult and Child Occupant Protection categories. However, I did find some minor issues with the fit and finish, particularly on the door panels. Also, the plastic elements around the centre console look a bit cheap on a vehicle which starts at over Rs 20 lakh, on-road. The Tata Sierra EV feels like one of the most complete electric SUVs the company has produced so far. It combines strong performance, impressive real-world range, genuine off-road capability and a feature-rich cabin in a package that stands apart from anything else in its segment. What impressed me the most was the balance between ride comfort and handling, along with the sheer sense of space and technology on offer. There are still a few areas where the fit and finish could be improved, but they are not significant enough to overshadow the overall experience. If you are looking for a premium electric SUV that can comfortably handle city commutes, highway trips and occasional adventures, the Sierra EV deserves to be high on your shortlist.
