Skoda Slavia will become the second car to be underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform which it will share with the Kushaq along with the two turbocharged petrol engine options. Main rivals will include Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna

So far, the Skoda Kushaq has spearheaded Skoda Auto Volkswagen India’s 2.0 strategy to achieve a stronger footing on the local turf. Come March and the Kushaq will be joined by another model that will take on popular sedans like the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna. The sedan has already been showcased at a media event and has even been spotted on a flatbed. But it’s the first time that we’ve seen a video of the car on a public road. Actually, a convoy of Skoda Slavia, as the new sedan will be called, was recently seen on a congested street of Pune and it sure has some street presence to feel more special than the competition.

Skoda Slavia Dimensions

The Skoda Slavia is a made-for-India model that is underpinned by the same India-spec MQB-A0-IN platform that even forms the base of the Kushaq and the Taigun. It will be even joined by a VW-badged sibling that is likely to be called the Virtus. Skoda Auto India claims to have achieved a localization level of 95 per cent for the new sedan. The Rapid-replacement will have the segment-longest wheelbase of 2,651 mm, and it measures 4,541 mm in length, 1,752 mm in width and 1,487 mm in height. This makes the upcoming sedan 128 mm longer, 53 mm wider and 21 mm taller than the Rapid. Even the wheelbase is 99 mm longer. The boot space measures 521-litre, which is the biggest in the segment.

Skoda Slavia Features

Inside, the Slavia will share a lot of its buttons, parts and features with the Kushaq. The two-spoke steering wheel, for instance, comes from the compact SUV and so does the 10-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In all, there will be three trim options – Active, Ambition and Style, with the top-spec trim getting MySkoda Connect, wireless charger, electric sunroof, ventilated seats, leather upholstery, auto aircon, keyless entry, LED headlamps and LED taillamps. The safety kit will include up to 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESC, Electronic Differential System (EDS), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Rear Parking Camera, ISOFIX child seat mounts, Multi-collision brake and Hill Hold Control.

It’s not just the platform that the Slavia and Kushaq will share among each other. Even the engines will be common to both the cars. This means that the Honda City-rivla will be sold with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mill belting out 115PS-175Nm and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol mill offering 150PS-250Nm. Transmission options for the former will be a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque-converter, while the latter will be sold with a 6-speed manual as well as a 7-speed DSG.
