Students get an opportunity to undergo vocational training at this renowned German automobile conglomerate to get professional and real-world experience
As a part of the Skoda-VW Car Project, the mechatronics students were able to come up with a rather impressive pickup truck concept. It is a fusion between the VW Taigun and VW Virtus. This famous vocational training from Skoda-VW has created some unforgettable concepts in the past. The entire project took 9 months to complete and was divided into different phases. During this process, the students got the opportunity to interact and receive guidance from the skilled professionals at SAVWIPL (Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.). As a result, they got access to suppliers and industry experts to realise their ideas.
Skoda-VW Car Project by Students
On this occasion, the students decided to create a pickup truck concept inspired by the Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan. The creation oozes ruggedness and adventure-ready stance. At the front, it gets the fascia of the Taigun with the addition of a black bumper, body graphics and a black radiator grille. On the sides, the colossal wheel arches with solid cladding and the black alloy wheels are hard to miss. Apart from that, the fender area has a snorkel and the roof houses auxiliary LED lighting to enhance the off-roading experience.
The body graphics even extend to the sides with handy roof rails and black side pillars accentuating the SUV traits. However, what excites me the most is the rear profile. The long overhang associated with the Virtus sedan acts as the cargo compartment on this occasion. There is a heavy metallic rod on either side to offer practicality. But the tail section has been borrowed from the Virtus itself. The students designed and 3D-printed various parts including specialised accessories like underbody protection, studded tyres, ambient lighting, and special roof-mounted lights, completing the rugged pickup truck design. All in all, this concept certainly showcases the creativity and professionalism of the young talent.
SAVWIPL Academy
The SAVWIPL Academy has offered Dual Vocational Training in mechatronics since 2011. This 3.5-year course takes inspiration from Germany’s vocational system. The aim is to prepare young talents for the automobile industry. It instils technological creativity, and confidence and promotes a problem-solving mindset for developing innovative technologies. While it has been immensely successful in Europe, even the Indian students are realising its value. I must also mention that such projects are also a part of the government’s ‘Skill India’ initiative to give practical exposure to students about the ins and outs of the automobile industry.
Speaking on this occasion, Andreas Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Production and Logistics, Å koda Auto a.s., said, “The successful completion of Student Car Project 2.0 in India is a showcase of how young talent can learn to use cutting-edge technology, precision, and efficiency to create industry-leading vehicles. By bringing global manufacturing practices to India, our goal is to create environments where young innovators can grow into the changemakers of tomorrow, strengthening India’s role as a global manufacturing hub. Our such projects not only focus on strengthening manufacturing capabilities but also ensure that the next generation is ready to drive innovation on a global scale.”
