Tata Motors has been in the spotlight due to the launch of the updated versions of its popular SUVs. While started by the Nexon facelift, the Harrier and Safari facelifts have continued the carmaker’s new car onslaught. The twins have been in news for their modern styling and new features. Also, there have been talks of an imminent launch of the petrol versions. However, it looks like the Harrier EV has taken precedence over the gasoline version.

Speaking to Autocar India, Tata Motors’ Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra has given insights about the release of the Harrier EV and Harrier petrol. Chandra mentions that the 1.5-liter TGDi petrol engine variant of the Harrier was shown at the 2023 Auto Expo, which is part of their plans. However, he even mentions that the launch is some time away, perhaps, a year or more. From this, it’s pretty clear that the Harrier EV would arrive before the petrol model. Chandra even revealed that the new turbo-petrol mill could make it to the CURVV and Sierra EV along with the Harrier twins.

The 1.5-liter TGDi turbo petrol engine in question was on show at the 2023 Auto Expo. This four-cylinder turbo engine delivers a maximum power output of 170 bhp at 5,000 rpm. The peak torque is rated at 280 Nm from 2,000-3,500 rpm range. The salient features of the gasoline-burner include aluminium construction, dual cam phasing, a variant oil pump, and an integrated exhaust manifold within the cylinder head. The motor will feature a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger for a strong low-end torque. The new engine will be sold with both manual and automatic transmission options.

Tata Motors is diligently working even on the development of the Harrier EV. The electric SUV will feature a handful of styling variations, including a closed-off grille. This will help one distinguish between the EV and its ICE siblings. The SUV will feature a dual electric motor setup, leading to an AWD layout. This will not only ensure a strong performance but even sufficient off-roading capabilities. The electric Harrier could offer a real-world driving range of up to 500 kms. The e-SUV will likely feature a 60 kWh battery pack.
