Soon, Tata Harrier and Safari could start coming with the same 2.2-litre engine that powers the Mahindra XUV700,

It is not uncommon for rival carmakers to use almost similar powertrains and we might see it happening once again.

As per a new report, Tata Harrier and Safari might end up getting the same 2.2-litre diesel engine as Mahindra XUV700. All those who have been following our market for a long time must know that the erstwhile Safari Dicor used to come with a 2.2-litre diesel engine. From the same time, the erstwhile Mahindra Scorpio used to come powered by the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine and it still does. But there are some interesting facts about these two powertrains.

Tata Harrier & Safari To Have Same Engine As Mahindra XUV700?

Rumour has it that Tata Motors are developing the BS6-compliant version of their 2.2-litre DiCOR engine in-house. At the moment, they use a Fiat-source 2.0-litre Multijet engine which is also used by Jeep in Compass. The rumoured BS6 2.2-litre is not a new engine but the same one that was used in the old Safari. To make it BS6 compliant, there will be standard additions like the Lean NOx Trap (LNT) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) with the introduction of AdBlue. Some of these are already being used in some diesel vehicles in order to comply with the latest emission norms.

However, what a lot of people might not know is that both the 2.2-litre unit for the old Safari and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine in Mahindra SUVs are produced by the same company AVL, Austria. In addition to that, the only difference is the ignition system which, in the case of Mahindra is a Bosch unit, while in the case of Tata Motors, is a Delphi unit. Apart from that, these two engines were essentially the same since inception.

Now Mahindra has moved to its mStallion line of engines in the petrol category, while Tata Motors were also rumoured to be developing their own version of the 1.5-litre petrol engine which will be the same as the 1.2-litre unit powering cars like the Altroz but with the addition of another cylinder. Hence, we might have the next generation of Harrier and Safari with an updated 2.2-litre diesel engine and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. For the exact details regarding the specifications, we will have to wait a bit longer.
