The much talked about Tata Hornbill micro SUV will make its debut in March this year in its concept iteration, production model to break cover in Feb 2020.

In order to bank on the current craze for SUV look-alike-body styled urban utility vehicles, automobile manufacturers have now started to explore segments which currently does not have cars of such sort present in them. After exploring the bounds of the segment of compact and sub-compact SUVs , automakers are now planning to test the waters in a segment below the latter, that of the Micro SUV.

Currently, this segment is populated only by the Mahindra KUV1OO. But soon, the likes of Maruti Suzuki is also going to launch their offering in it as well which will be based on the Concept Future S showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. Tata Motors, which is currently riding high on the back of several new product launches lately also plans to enter this segment of Micro-SUVs with the Hornbill.

The Tata Hornbill, codename for the automaker’s micro-SUV is expected to launch in India sometime during the year 2020. According to a recent report published in Autocar India, it seems that Tata will debut the Hornbill concept at the upcoming 2019 Geneva Motor Show during the month of March this year.

Further details regarding the Tata Hornbill micro SUV are still under the wraps. However, it is likely that it will share its engine specifications with the upcoming 45X based premium hatchback. As a result, its petrol derivative is going to come with a 1.2-litre, turbocharged, 3-cylinder engine capable of churning out 110 BHP of power along with 150 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual along with an AMT unit available on select variants.

Since the Tata Hornbill will arrive in India post the implementation of BS-VI emission regulations, it is unlikely to feature a diesel engine option. This is because the prices of BS-VI diesel engines, due to the hardware used, will be quite steep for the segment in which the Hornbill is going to fall in.
