The Tata Nano Twist AMT could be launched in India as soon as August 2014 according to a report. This was confirmed to The Hindu by Mr. Ranjit Yadav, President, Tata Motors (Passenger Vehicles) during the unveiling of the Revotron 1.2 T engine. Tata plans to launch a couple of products every year to increase customer interest in the brand.

We will keep you posted on further developments relating to the Nano Twist AMT, stay tuned to Car Blog India.

Updated on 7th April 2014

The Tata Nano Twist AMT variant has been spied testing in India. The car will feature an Automated Manual Transmission, a 5-speed electro-hydraulic unit which Tata claims will make the Nano even more efficient. Efficiency may improve by about 15-20 percent as compared to the regular Tata Nano variants, which employ a 4-speed manual transmission. Tata has been concentrating on bringing the AMT technology to its new lineup of cars to capitalise on its popularity among people which was first exploited by Maruti Suzuki in the Celerio hatchback. Apart from the Nano, the upcoming Zest compact sedan will also get the AMT on the diesel variant. Check out the images below.

The long speculated Tata Nano diesel has been put on hold for the time being now and Tata is evaluating the launch of other variants of the Nano including the Tata Nano AMT variant. Mr. Ranjit Yadav, President, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Business has said that, โ€œCurrently weโ€™re not visualizing a diesel on the Nano with the price value equations going the way theyโ€™re with diesel and petrol. In our view the entry A1 and A2 segments will be petrol so diesel does not make that much effective sense.โ€

Instead it will launch the Nano with an Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) that has become pretty popular off late in the country courtesy of the Celerio. It offers better fuel efficiency than a manual transmission and offers the comfort of an automatic transmission at a price which is half of what an automatic costs. The Nano AMT will become the cheapest AMT in the country when it launches in late 2014.

The Nano AMT was showcased at the Auto Expo 2014 and it was joined in by a tail gate opening variant of the car. These new variants came with better interiors, steering wheel and were slightly restyled as well. Nano Twist with power steering went on sale earlier this year and Tata Motors plans on launching more variants of the Nano instead of giving it a new motor altogether. Rising diesel costs have also contributed to this change of heart by Tata Motors as increasing diesel prices have started to bridge the gap between petrol and diesel propelled cars.

Number 1 on the checklist for Tata Motors is revamping the Nanoโ€™s image. The car is now being promoted as a youthful city car instead of the countryโ€™s cheapest car which it was once promoted as. Nano was meant to be the common manโ€™s car but went on to become the poor manโ€™s car, a status that nobody wanted to be associated with. Now with the new variants and image makeover kicking in, we wish to see if the Nanoโ€™s sales see a northward revision.
