Tata Motors has been planning the electric version of the Punch for a long time in our market.

The digital illustrations you see here show us what the Tata Punch EV could look like. Punch, in its traditional ICE version, has been an immensely successful product in our market since its inception. Its bold styling, SUV stance, 5-star safety rating at Global NCAP, and latest tech and convenience features are some of the reasons which made it so popular. In fact, it climbed onto the list of the top 10 highest-selling cars in India right from the start. This is no mean feat. No wonder Tata is planning its EV iteration as well.

Tata Punch EV

This digital concept has been created by Rushlane. It demonstrates what the electric version of the micro SUV could look like. It combines various attractive elements of existing Punch along with the upcoming design philosophy of Tata Motors. At the front, we get to witness a sleek layout with LED DRLs on the extreme edges of the bonnet with a thin LED strip connecting them, the main headlamps are positioned on the bumper, a trend we have been experiencing a lot these days, a rugged skid plate, large grille above it with tri-arrow motifs and large housing around the headlamps.

On the sides, one gets a clean look. This is enabled with the flush-fitting door handles, black side pillars, roof rails, dual-tone roof, the rear door handle is mounted on the C-pillar, thick side body cladding imposing the SUV traits, almost squared wheel arches, sporty black alloy wheels, wraparound taillamps as seen on the regular model and more. All in all, there is the incorporation of a modern touch at the front, while the overall silhouette remains the same.

Specs

As per the information available to us, the Punch EV could come powered by a 25.58 kWh Litium-ion battery pack that could lend it a range of 320-350 km. The electric motor could generate a decent 74 hp and 114 Nm of peak power and torque. The single-speed transmission powers the front wheels allowing a 0-80 km/h sprint in just 13.5 secs. It could also have a top speed of around 85 km/h to maximize range. This is believable as the Tiago EV also gets this powertrain. Most likely, Punch EV will borrow the same configuration. The prices might feature around Rs 8.50 lakh to Rs 12.50 lakh, ex-showroom. It will rival the Citroen e-C3 which ranges from Rs 11.50 lakh to Rs 12.76 lakh, ex-showroom.

What We Think

Tata Motors is the leading player in the EV segment of our country. Its Nexon EV has been the highest-selling EV in our market to date. There are also other EVs in Tata’s camp including the Tiago EV and Tigor EV. Clearly, the strategy to convert the existing models into EVs has worked well for the Indian auto giant. Now, it aims to replicate this even with Punch and we don’t see any reason why it won’t work. People will get even more options within the Tata brand to buy an affordable EV. We shall wait and watch how soon we will be able to experience the Punch EV on our roads.
