new yamaha rx100 relaunch

There are many reports floating around on the internet claiming that Yamaha will be launching the iconic RX100 in our market again. However, it isn’t as straightforward. It is one of the most legendary motorcycles in the country. It was incepted back in 1985. At the time, it gained immense popularity for its impressive performance. As a result, it remained in production for 11 years until 1996. Thereafter, it was discontinued and we don’t have a newer model on sale ever since. Recently, there were many rumours surrounding this bike. But we are not sure if it would make it to production in the 100-cc segment.

Truth of Yamaha Launching RX100

The original RX100 had a 2-stroke 100-cc engine which had a power of 11 PS and torque of 10.39 Nm. While these were incredibly potent figures all those decades ago, it might not be the case today. In fact, this old engine was notorious for tailpipe emissions. However, today, all bikes come with 4-stroke technology that are much less polluting. With we will never have the RX100, as we have known it for all those years. In fact, in the 100-cc guise, it won’t even sound as bombastic and aggressive as the original model.

The Chairman of Yamaha India, Eishin Chihana said in an interview, “The Yamaha RX100 was a very special model for India and what made it so was its styling, light weight, power and sound. To recreate those criteria in a four-stroke model, it would have to be a โ€œminimum of 200cc, but even there you canโ€™t produce a great sound. We have no intention to ruin the RX100, so until we are sure that we can produce a high performance, lightweight bike with the correct performance, we will not launch it. With the current line-up, 155cc is not enough.”

What We Think

This should clear the air regarding what the future holds. We will most likely not see Yamaha launching the iconic RX100 in our market any time soon. Even if they do decide to launch some version of it, it won’t be very similar to the motorcycle we all love. Therefore, it will be fair to say that the legendary motorbike won’t see the light of day in its original avatar. We shall keep an eye out for what Yamaha decides to do with the RX moniker going forward.
