These two are performance models from Yamaha which a lot of riding enthusiasts adore

The Yamaha R3 and MT-03 have received a considerable price reduction which makes them immense value for money for riding aficionados. This makes owning them much more enticing and affordable than ever before. Part of the reason for this massive price cut is that the sales were not all that great until now. Yamaha clearly would’ve loved to sell a whole lot more, especially considering how appealing these are in terms of styling and performance. However, the steep price tags kept a lot of potential buyers away. All that is about to change now.

The Yamaha R3 bore a retail sticker of Rs 4.65 lakh in India. However, after a whopping Rs 1.05 lakh price reduction, it is now available for an attractive Rs 3.60 lakh. This is much lower than its rival, the Aprilia RS 457 which sells for Rs 4.20 lakh. In fact, this positions it in the vicinity of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the KTM RC 390 which retail for Rs 3.43 lakh and Rs 3.21 lakh, respectively. Similarly, the Yamaha MT-03 experiences a Rs 1.10 lakh price drop from Rs 4.60 lakh to Rs 3.50 lakh. Its closest adversary would be the KTM 390 Duke which bears a price tag of Rs 3.13 lakh. Clearly, this will make things mighty interesting for the buyers.

Note that both these motorcycles share the same 321-cc engine. However, the difference lies in their applications and design. The R3 bikes use a 321-cc 4-stroke, 2-cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC 4-valve engine which generates a healthy 42 PS and 29.5 Nm of maximum power and torque. This mill pairs with a 6-speed transmission with a wet multi-plate clutch. The fuel capacity is 14 litre and the ground clearance is 160 mm with a kerb weight of 169 kg. It possesses a wheelbase of 1,380 mm. Most specifications of the MT-03 are similar save for the 167 kg weight.

My View

I believe offering such a huge price reduction has to be the most direct way to announce that Yamaha wants to work on its sales. Clearly, this is the most crucial aspect for any two-wheeler manufacturer. If Yamaha is willing to let go of a part of its profits, it means that the situation with the sales was quite disappointing to begin with. Now, we shall have to wait to see how well this measure translates to sales going forward. I will keep an eye out for that in times to come.
