Joining the Tiago hatchback in Tata‘s product portfolio will be a new compact sedan, which, could go on sale as the “Tata Sway”. Internally, however, it has been named as the “Kite 5”. The upcoming Tata Kite 5 compact sedan will be a logical replacement for the very successful Indigo eCS. Basically, the Kite 5 is the sedan derivative of the Tiago hatchback. The Tiago-derived sedan, which made its debut at the Auto Expo 2016, should be out by April, 2017. Prices will start at around Rs. 4 lakhs for the base petrol variant. While you can safely expect us to come up with a detailed Tata Kite 5 review and test drive report at the earliest, here, on this page, we have all the Tata Kite 5 launch date, along with the available information on its price, features, specifications and variants.

Like we said, the Tata Kite 5 compact sedan launch is still some time away from us and while this car’s debut took place at the Auto Expo 2016, our guess is that the Tata Kite 5 launch date will fall only around April, 2017. Production of the Kite 5 compact sedan (aka Tata Sway) will take place at the manufacturer’s Sanand facility in Gujarat. Pictures of the Kite 5 in production-ready guise surfaced online recently indicating the launch is not too far away.

Tata Kite 5 (Sway) Exterior Design
As has always been the case with compact sedans in India, the upcoming Tiago-based sedan will share most of its design with the donor hatchback. This means that its front-end of the Kite sedan will be characterised by wraparound headlamps and a wide honeycomb radiator grille. The design of the upcoming Tata sedan is expected to bog similar to that of the Tiago till around the C-pillar, with the major difference arising out of the longer rear overhang on the sedan sibling. The pre-production model shown at the Auto Expo was seen flaunting smoked headlamps and stylish rims. While the smoked test mules have been spotted with smoked headlamps, the alloys will be the same as the Tiago’s. We will get finer details only on the Tata Kite 5 launch date.
As evident from the pictures above, the rear of the Kite 5 features notchback styling. It gets split tail lamps that could get LED detailing. The bumpers get black inserts with chrome detailing. This recessed black element also houses the reflector units. There’s also a rear spoiler featuring the secondary stop lamp. The final production form ditches the black roof of the auto expo display car and gets Tiago’s alloy wheels.
Yet another spy shot of the upcoming Kite 5 compact sedan reveals it stays true to the model that was on display at the Auto Expo in February 2016.

This car too will get a short-diameter three-spoke steering wheel that will boast of audio/telephony controls on the higher variants. Tata Kite 5 Sedan (Sway) Competition
Majorly, the Kite 5 will rival the Chevrolet Essentia Compact Sedan that was also showcased at the Expo 2016. Also, the upcoming Tiago-based sedan will indirectly rival the likes of Hyundai Xcent, Volkswagen Ameo, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, and most importantly, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
Tata Kite 5 Engine and Transmission
As is the case with most compact sedan derivatives, the Kite 5 will also borrow the Tiago’s engine and transmission options. Kite 5 petrol will get a 1.2 L engine with 84 bhp of power and 114 Nm of torque on tap. Diesel variants will get the new 1.05 L unit that makes 69 bhp of max power and 140 Nm of peak torque. Both engines get a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. Tata will soon launch the Tiago with an optional 5-speed AMT. This automatic transmission option will also be made available for the Kite 5. However, we’re not sure if it will be offered at the time of launch or added to the lineup at a later stage.
