Theย 2014 Honda City has been launched in India after almost two months of publicity overdrive. Honda has high hopes on the car and has all out to make it the most attractive mid-segment sedan you can buy in the country. The Hyundai Verna wooed customers with it’s styling, features and value-for-money tag and we can say that Honda is pretty close to trumping the Verna in terms of equipment and as a value-for-money proposition.

Honda has brought forward the launch date of the new 2014 Honda City to 7th January 2014 as it has received a lot of interest in the car from potential customers. Inventories of the previous gen-car is also very low which has also contributed to this decision. The 2014 Honda City will be the first time that the car brand will receive a diesel engine in India, and Honda is betting very high on it being able to make it to the top of the segment, and trumping the current leader the Hyundai Verna.

The 2014 Honda City will be offered with a 1.5-litre, 118 BHP, i-VTEC engine, mated either a 5-speed manual or an automatic transmission (CVT). It will, for the first time, also feature a 1.5-litre, 99 BHP, Earth Dreams diesel engine which will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission. The ย ARAI testedย fuel-efficiency figures for the petrol and diesel motors are 18 KMPL and 26 KMPL respectively. ย The Honda City diesel will be the most fuel-efficient car on sale in the country when it is launched in January 2014.

It is expected that the 2014 Honda City will be priced between Rs. 9 Lakh to Rs. 11 Lakh when launched, the prices are ex-showroom Delhi.

We will be bringing you live updates from the event, keep tuned in to Car Blog India.

Updated on 26th November 2013

Honda has revealed the all-new 2014 Honda City, which is the 4th generation of the car, in India at an event here in Delhi. Dealerships across the country have started taking pre-orders for the car, the first of which will be delivered in January 2014, when the car will be officially launched in the country. This is the first car from Honda’s stable which has been showcased with the company’s new ‘Exciting H-Design’ philosophy in India, which was first showcased globally on the 2014 Honda Jazz. The 2014 Honda City will also receive a diesel engine for the first time since it’s introduction in the Indian market since 1998. Though Honda has not announced the price of the car, we do not expect it to cost much more than the current car, as it is one of Honda’s best selling cars in the Indian market.

What’s New?

Mr. Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, Managing Officer, Honda Motor Company and Representative of Development, Purchasing and Production in Asia & Oceania Region, Mr Hironori Kanayama, President & CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd and Mr. Raman Kumar Sharma, Director & Sr. Vice President, General Affairs, Honda Cars India Ltd With The 2014 Honda City

Exterior Design

2014 Honda City Front Right Quarter

Unlike the previous generations of the car, the 2014 Honda City seems to have gotten a more evolutionary design of the previous generation car. In terms of its dimensions the car remains the same in terms of length and width, but is taller and has a longer wheelbase as compared to the previous-gen City. At front you get dual-lamp headlight units, which look very similar to the one on the older car. The grille is new, and follows Honda’s new ‘Exciting H Design’ philosophy, and looks like a wing made of chrome. The bumper is pretty aggressive looking and the two prominent lines on the hood give the car a more sporty/menacing look than it’s predecessor.

2014 Honda City Right Side Profile

Move to the side, and the profile seems similar to the older generation Honda City, there are surface design elements which are different though. You see a prominent crease running from the front door all the way to the rear tail-lamp, which is reminiscent of the 2014 Honda Jazz. The design of the front and rear windows have been slightly altered too.

2014 Honda City Rear

Move to the rear and you see a huge difference as compared to the older car, the simplistic lamps of the old car have been replaced by multi-element tail-lamp units, which extend all the way from the sides till the number plate holder. The tail-lamp design seems similar to the one found on the Honda Mobilio. The overall design of the car gives it a very aggressive look, but we are a bit dissapointed at how it looks similar to the older car.

Interior Design

2014 Honda City Front Dashboard

Inside, the 2014 Honda City is wholly different from the last-gen car. The dash looks very modern, and stylish. This is courtesy Honda’s ‘Layered Floating Cockpit’ design, there are no rotary switched anywhere on the car, the buttons on the dash have been replaced with touch-input surfaces/screens, and everything seems to be angled towards the driver.

2014 Honda City Driver View

The dashboard on the new Honda City features a prominent multimedia screen surrounded by simple buttons to control the various features like media-player, phone etc.Under that, you get a touch panel to control the climate-control system, which is a first in this segment, it looks and feels different and works well too. You get rectangular air-vents all around which gels well with the whole theme inside the car. You get a steering wheel with buttons for different functions, with stalks for controlling functions like the the windshield wipers and the headlights.

Comfort

2014 Honda City Rear Cabin

Honda is known for its interior packaging, which was showcased best on the Honda Jazz. The Honda City gains a lot of interior space thanks to the increase in height and wheelbase. The leg-room at the back has increased drastically, it would remind one of the space in a Indigo XL, which is great considering the fact that the new Honda City has more features packed into it and is not at all bare-boned. The doors shut with a comforting thud, the panel gaps are consistent, the surfaces are nice to touch, the seats, both and the front and rear are comfortable and spacious. The space at the rear is surprising, sitting abreast (with one very healthy person) was very easy and impressive. The addition of a rear-A/C vent makes things better for the rear passengers. Boot space is great and useable thanks to limited intrusions by the suspension arms. The spare wheel is not an alloy, as is the norm with the company.

Verdict

First impressions: Very good. Now we await the price, Honda has to be very competitive with the price to let their highest selling product continue to do so in the future and regain lost ground in the mid-size sedan segment from the likes of the Hyundai Verna.
