Hyundai’s first and most successful model in India, the Santro is set for a relaunch next year. The new model is expected to feature a host of segment-leadingย interior space, features and a new lineup of engines.
Launched back in the late 90s, the Santro had a successful run for 16 years and holds multiple titles like most sold the vehicle by the automaker in India. The production of the said model was discontinued in early 2015 wherein it was still clocking about 3000 units in sales per month. Even the newer vehicles like the Eon, brought in as a replacement for Santro couldn’t shake the sales and the company ended up discontinuing the model. The reason for ending production of Santro was simple – to use the production line at the company’s TN plant more efficiently which otherwise was occupied by Santro.

With the introduction of new generations cars like the i10, Grand i10, i20 Santro was easily the odd one out and the company wanted to focus on the more profiting models. Post-Santro, the company also discontinued the i10 for similar reasons.

The 2018 Santro is expected to feature similar design language in sync with the other models of the company following the “fluidic” design theme. on the inside, the car is expected to have segment-leading space and feature new technologies. This will be Hyundai’s first fully automatic vehicle in this segment and AMT variantย will follow shortly.

Powering the new Santro might beย an 800cc to a 1000cc engine that will be mated to an automatic gearbox. Upon launch, this is going to be a segment first and the move will leave the competition in the dust.

Hyundai is taking the Make In India initiative seriously and will be investing about 1000 crore on the research and development of the new Santro. The same has been approved and is being done in conjunction with the company’s R&D centre in South Korea.

The launch of the new Hyundai Santro is slated for the second half of 2018 and you can expect the company to unveil the model at 2018 Auto Expo. Keep checking this space for more info on the same.
