The 2020 Mercedes Benz GLE will be sold in India with only two diesel engines and no petrol option with price going up to Rs. 1.25 crore for the GLE 400d variant.
Mercedes Benz has just launched the all-new GLE SUV in India today. Prices for the 2020 Mercedes Benz GLE start off from Rs 73.70 lakh for the GLE 300d variant and goes all the way up to Rs 1.25 crore for the GLE 400d in India. The latter, launched as the G 400d Hip-Hop Edition, is a direct import, which contributes to its higher asking price.
Mercedes will be offering the GLE in India with two powertrain options on offer: GLE 300 d, and the GLE 400 d. Let’s start with the GLE 300 d. It will be powered by a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine which delivers 245PS and 500Nm of torque. The GLE 400 d will be powered by a BS6-complaint 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged diesel engine which puts out 330PS and 700Nm of torque.
Unfortunately, Mercedes will not be offering a petrol engine on the GLE SUV. Internationally, the GLE is also available as a GLE 450 variant which gets a 3.0-litre inline-six cylinder engine which puts out an impressive 367PS and 500Nm of torque. This engine will also gets a 48V mild-hybrid system. Both the diesel engines will be paired to Mercedes’ 9-speed automatic gearbox with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive.
The 2020 GLE looks much more upright and in essence, a smaller version of the GLS. The face gets Merc’s twin-slat grille with the Mercedes logi in the middle. There are new LED headlamps that come with with Mercedes’ twin eyebrow DRLs. In profile, the GLE looks familiar to the existing model, thanks to an almost identical roofline and glass area. There are new dual tone alloys to body cladding to accentuate on the SUV stance. The rear end is completely new with redesigned LED tail lamps that are much sleeker than before and a dual exhaust setup.

The interiors also have a brand new design language. The dashboard is simplistic and is dominated by a twin screen setup that uses the latest iteration of Mercedes’ MBUX software. Below the infotainment are the four AC vents and the aircraft style toggles for the climate control. The cabin is really opulent with extensive use of rich materials and its much more spacious than before as well, thanks to an increase in the wheelbase.

The GLE is a pretty well loaded car in terms of equipment. It will come with a panoramic sunroof, THERMATIC 4-zone automatic climate control, MBUX multimedia infotainment system, 64-colour ambient lighting, active parking assist, 7 airbags, 19-inch wheels, LED headlamps and taillamps. The Elite variant adds MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with ultra range high beam, 4MATIC with variable torque distribution, AIRMATIC suspension, 20-inch wheels, 360-degree camera, electrically adjustable rear seats, and intelligent headlight control plus. The new GLE will be displayed at the Auto Expo 2020 where you can get a first hand look at it. It will take on the likes of the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90 in India.
