Upcoming Maruti CNG Cars in India - Maruti Grand Vitara to Tata Punch

Rising fuel prices have forced people to look for alternatives and CNG powertrain proves to be a great one, at least in cities where the infrastructure is well-developed.

In this post, we discuss the 5 upcoming CNG SUVs in India. Carmakers have realised that astronomical fuel prices are causing people to lean toward CNG cars. This becomes clear if we take a look at the rising sales of CNG vehicles in the last couple of years. We know that converting to EVs will take a long time if we consider mass adoption. Therefore, CNG or bi-fuel powertrains can serve that gap needed to bridge the ICE-powered cars and electric vehicles. Let us take a look at these SUVs here.

5 Upcoming CNG SUVs in India

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder CNG

First on the list is the mid-size SUV from Toyota, the Hyryder. It will borrow the CNG powertrain from Maruti Suzuki. That will be a 1.5-litre mill producing a decent 87 hp and 121.5 Nm of peak power and torque already in available with the Ertiga/XL6. The claimed mileage will be 26.1 km/kg which will be an attractive aspect of the SUV. Toyota has already started taking bookings for the same at Rs 25,000.

Maruti Grand Vitara CNG

Since these two are essentially the same SUVs, the CNG version of the Hyryder will soon be followed by the Grand Vitara CNG. Note that only the 1.5-litre mild hybrid version will be converted to CNG and not the strong hybrid that already has an ARAI mileage of 27.97 km/h.

Maruti Brezza CNG

The compact SUV segment will also have the CNG option with the Brezza. Since the Brezza also comes with the same 1.5-litre powertrain as the Grand Vitara/Hyryder, we can expect a similar CNG powertrain. The mileage will most likely be between 25-30 km/kg.

Joining the Brezza in the compact SUV segment will be the Tata Nexon. Its 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine might be chosen for the CNG option. However, the details of the same are not yet available. In the petrol version, it makes a healthy 120 hp and 170 Nm of peak power and torque.
