Let’s see how the petrol variants of Honda Amaze, Maruti Dzire, Ford Aspire and other compact sedans fared against their diesel ones in 2019.
Despite increasing buyers for diesel cars over the past couple of years, most of the small car buyers are inclined towards petrol cars. Be it a hatchback or a small SUV or a small sedan, petrol buyers are still more than diesel car buyers.
In the compact sedan segment, we all know that Maruti Dzire is the leader, followed by Amaze and then Aura or Xcent in the third position. Now Dzire has lost its diesel engine and Ameo has been permanently discontinued.

As you can see, except Ford Aspire, rest of the other sedans have higher petrol buyers than diesel. The highest can be seen with Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor, both having 75% and 90% of their buyers going towards petrol engines, respectively.
Since Dzire has no diesel engine, this year its sales would be negligible. Last year, a total of 1.99 Lakh units of Dzire were sold out of which, 58.5% were petrol buyers. The difference is not that big because its diesel engine is said to be highly fuel efficient.
As for Amaze, despite its diesel engine also being fuel efficient, its petrol unit is said to be the best of the segment. Xcent has now been replaced by Aura and since last year, its sales started declining gradually. Tigor was never as popular as Tiago and Nexon, but has most of the petrol buyers.
Ford Aspire has always had more diesel buyers than petrol. Its 1.5 Litre TDCi diesel engine is the most powerful of the lot and also best in torque. And it is an unsaid rule that Ford’s diesel engine are more appreciated and accepted in India.

The last is Ameo which was discontinued due to BS6 norms. Even Ameo has a close cut with 46% of its buyers opting for diesel engines. It came with a 1.5 Litre TDI engine and a 1.0 Litre three-cylinder MPI petrol engine.
