Maruti Gypsy

This modified Maruti Gypsy gets complete mechanical modifications done and can produce nearly 400 BHP worth power with its 1.3 Litre engine.

Maruti Gypsy is an iconic car in India, with its remembrance in the off-roading circles specially. The humble SUV could take on the toughest terrains despite having any modern electronic off-roading kit. It was discontinued some time back as its lifecycle ended in India and Maruti chose not to upgrade it with safety features.

This is a rare and very impressive modified version of the Maruti Gypsy. It has been modified into a rally car but that’s just not it. Under the hood, this Gypsy gets the same 1.3 Litre petrol engine which can produce up to 400 BHP! That’s shocking because, with this figure, it gets more powerful than the Ford Mustang! The 0-100 km/hr sprint is achieved in just about 6 seconds.

Due to Gypsy being a small car and possible problems in future, the figures have been limited to 172 BHP. A Bangalore based engineering company has modified this Maruti Gypsy just for rally purposes. It gets a bigger turbo which helps in producing more power. However, the speed has been limited so that there’s not much load on the engine.

On the other hand, the engineer has equipped the Gypsy well enough to take up all the power. It gets a Mahle Engine rod, modified oil squirters, custom radiator, cooling shrouds and a twin fan system. Further, the turbo and exhaust gaskets are made out of notched copper. Further, it gets rally spec wheels and tyres, strengthened axle tubes and IronMan leaf spring suspension.

There are many other components like air intake filters, larger sodium-filled intake valves, forged pistons, a turbosmart electronic boost controller, etc. Other than that, there is no further upgrade done. The steering wheel feedback is the same and so are the gears and transfer case. Even the looks of the car are kept very immaculate with just some stickers on the body.

This modified Maruti Gypsy took part in the 2019 K1000 Rally for the first time. However, due to an accident its axle bended and still achieved a commendable second spot. Gypsy is one of the most preferred cars when it comes to dirt rallies because of its low maintenance, easy going nature and highly modifiable platform.
