Tata Nexon 4-star vs 5-star Global NCAP Rating

Tata Nexon became the first made in India car to score a full 5-star safety rating at the GNCAP back in 2018.

Tata Nexon proudly continues to wear the tag of the first made in India car to score a full 5-star safety rating at the GNCAP. As a direct consequence of that, the Indian market received a slew of safer cars, especially from the Indian auto giants, Tata and Mahindra. But the vision to lead the automobile industry to this path of world-class safety rated cars began in 2018 with the Nexon. The compact SUV contributed significantly to raising awareness among Indian buyers regarding the relevance of safety in cars. 4 years later, Nexon has become one of the highest-selling compact SUVs in the market by posting consistent monthly sales taking down the competition.

How Did Tata Nexon Get a 5-Star GNCAP Rating?

Not many people know this, but in the first attempt, the Nexon received a decent 4-star safety rating at the GNCAP which was also a monumental feat at the time. However, Tata made significant changes to the SUV to bump up the safety. But what really helped the Tata Nexon to go from 4 to 5 stars? Alejandro Furas, Technical Director at Global NCAP explains, “The ABS, or anti-locking brakes, in a full channel version, is a standard fitment for all the cars, so all the Nexon’s wheels have ABS in four channels. At the same time, the seat belt reminder was also now introduced by the manufacturer as a standard feature for driver and passenger side as well.”

Although the mandatory requirements by the government of India were not that high at the time, Tata Motors went over and beyond to bring in the wave of safety trends to our market. Today, a lot of younger car buyers take into consideration the safety rating of a car before making a purchase decision. This was almost unheard of back in 2018 and Tata Motors has to be accredited with this transformational wave. Now, the Nexon boasts an impressive 16.06 / 17 points for adult protection and a decent 25 / 49 points (3-stars) for child protection according to the official GNCAP test report.
