2009 Toyota Fortuner vs 2022 GR Sport model price comparison

Toyota Fortuner is the most popular full-size 7-seat SUV in the country that started its journey in our market with humble beginnings.

You would be surprised to find out the change in the costs of Toyota Fortuner from 2009 to 2022. This legendary SUV was introduced in our market back in 2009 with high hopes. It was an internationally-acclaimed product even back then. Toyota Kirloskar Motor hoped to sell over 2,000 units in 2009 with a starting price of Rs 18.45 lakh, ex-showroom. Needless to say, it was a lot of money back in the day. Little did we know that the Fortuner will go on to become the most successful full-size SUV the country would ever see.

The only competitor it had back then was the other legend of the segment, Ford Endeavour. Interestingly, until last year (2021) these two remained the most popular products in the segment. We all know that Ford quit manufacturing cars in India last year and the Fortuner remains the sole popular product. However, there is some competition from the likes of MG Gloster but nothing major. That is the reason why Toyota now prices its top GR-Sport trim at just under Rs 49.60 lakh, ex-showroom.

This has resulted in the on-road prices in some states crossing that Rs 60 lakh mark. That puts things into perspective. Who would’ve thought that this SUV from Toyota could become even more expensive than the luxury car brands? Of course, the quality of the product and the capabilities of the SUVs have increased manifold since then as well. It is now more capable than ever when it comes to off-road equipment, the engines are more powerful in its current iteration and the looks are certainly more modern.

Specs

Back in 2009, the Fortuner was launched with a 3.0-litre diesel engine with a turbocharger and intercooler that produced 171 PS and had 4×4 capabilities. In its current avatar, it comes powered by a 2.7-litre petrol unit (164 bhp / 245 Nm) and a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine (201 bhp / 420 Nm). It is paired with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options. With the automatic transmission, the torque produced is a massive 500 Nm with the diesel mill. There is plenty of off-roading equipment on offer to make it immensely capable in terrains without tarmac roads. The prices of the SUV range from Rs 32.40 lakh to Rs 49.57 lakh, ex-showroom.
