Many OEMs use vehicles from other brands for benchmarking purposes and the Mahindra Scorpio N spied in Japan is likely to be imported for the same purpose

Mahindra’s latest off-roader, Scorpio-N is one of the most aspirational and best-selling SUVs in its segment. In a surprising development, though, it was recently spotted in Japan while being transported on a flatbed. The test mule caught the attention of Japanese car enthusiasts, who took pictures and posted them on social media.

Many Indian internet users who saw the pics believed that the Indian SUV is on its way to the Japanese Domestic Market. However, it is highly possible that an OEM in Japan may have imported the Scorpio-N for benchmarking. The exact details are not available at the moment. The heavy camouflage makes it difficult for us to understand all the details. The test mule also featured R18-inch diamond cut-wheels and LED projector headlights, thereby indicating that it is one of the higher-spec variants – Z8 or Z8L. The base-spec Z2 on the other hand gets steel wheels, while the Z4 and Z6 trims come with capped steel wheels.

Other key features of the new Mahindra SUV spotted in Japan include the distinctive slatted grille, tin-cylinder headlights, lower grille, skid plates and rounded wheel arches. The rear highlights include high window line, roof rails, a prominent spoiler, rear wiper, vertically stacked LED lights and a flat tailgate with a left side handle which clearly indicates that this is Scorpio-N. With this solid proof that this is the top-spec Scorpio-N variant, it becomes easy to understand what’s inside. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch TFT colour console, AdrenoX Connect with Alexa built-in, dual-zone automatic climate control, voice commands, built-in navigation and wireless charging. The SUV also boasts brown-coloured leather seats and steering wheel adorn the interiors.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N is on sale in India with two engine options, a 2.2-litre diesel unit and a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine. Both these engines are offered with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual gearbox options. The diesel engine option is also offered with an optional four wheel drive system. It rivals the likes of the Tata Harrier/Safari and Hyundai Creta/Alcazar while being an affordable alternative to Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. The SUV is sold in four variants namely Z2, Z4, Z6 and Z8 and is priced between Rs 12.74 lakh to Rs 24.05 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
