While the Toyota Innova Hycross-based MPV from Maruti was earlier speculated to be christened ‘Engage’, it will be instead called the ‘Invicto’.

Maruti Suzuki is one of the biggest car manufacturers in the Indian market. It plans to launch multiple models this year as well. Last month, the automotive brand trademarked the name ‘Engage’ in the country. While the company didn’t officially reveal the recipient of the name, it was speculated to be designated for the upcoming Toyota Innova Hycross-based MPV. Now, though, it has come to light that the new model will be called Invicto. The premium MPV will launch on July 5 and will be sold through the NEXA premium retail chain.

New Flagship from Maruti Suzuki

Recent reports claim the upcoming premium MPV will be available in 6- and 7-seater layouts. The rebadged version of the Toyota Innova Hycross will have no direct rival except, of course, its own donor vehicle. Meanwhile, the Maruti-badged spinoff will be slightly different in design and styling. Obviously, the Invicto will become the most expensive MPV ever sold by the country’s largest carmaker. The premium offering will be priced in the Rs 19 lakh – 30 lakh (ex-showroom) bracket.

This will ensure that the MPV becomes the Indo-Japanese carmaker’s new flagship model. It will sport the brand’s signature grille, newly-designed headlamps, taillamps, and front bumper. On the inside, it will likely come with a different theme than the Innova Hycross. Additional features will include a new 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, powered second-row seats with an ottoman function, and a 360-degree camera.

Maruti Invicto Will be Based on TNGA-C Platform

The premium MPV will be based on the monocoque TNGA-C platform with FWD (front-wheel drive) system. It will be the company’s first model to get an advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). The Maruti Invicto MPV will be powered by a 2.0L petrol engine with optional hybrid technology. The hybrid version will offer a power of 186PS and 206Nm of torque. It can be paired with an e-CVT gearbox. On the other hand, the gasoline unit will offer a maximum power of 174PS and 205Nm of torque. It can be paired with a CVT automatic transmission.

What We Think

The vast popularity that the Ertiga enjoys has made Maruti Suzuki a dominant force in the lower MPV segment. However, except for the crossover-ish XL6, the carmaker is conspicuous by its absence in higher MPV segments. This is precisely where the Maruti Invicto will help the carmaker consolidate its foothold on the market. The Toyota Innova Hycross has already proven its mettle in private and commercial vehicle markets. With the introduction of a Maruti-badged sibling, safely expect a wider acceptance for the strong-hybrid MPV. This will be especially true in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, where Maruti Suzuki enjoys a far wider presence than Toyota Kirloskar Motor. So, all in all, the launch of the Hycross-based Invicto should lead to a win-win situation for both the OEMs.
