Maruti Fronx Launches in South Africa

The Made-in-India Maruti Fronx launches in South Africa. Fronx is a crossover SUV / hatchback which is positioned between the Baleno and a Grand Vitara. In fact, it is based on the Baleno premium hatchback. Essentially, it is a coupe version of the Baleno with some premium features and appearance. However, there are mechanical changes to it as well. A South African car expert captures an expansive conversation with the Suzuki official and even shares glimpses of the test drive. The Fronx is available in 4 trims – 1.5 GL (MT), 1.5 GL (AT), 1.5 GLX (MT) and 1.5 GLX (AT). Here is what he thinks.

On the outside, the Fronx has a modern design language. This includes things like LED projector headlamps on the bumper, LED DRLs with a tri-element scheme on the bonnet, square wheel arches, generous use of chrome on the front grille to amp up the bling, stylish 16-inch alloy wheels, sturdy skid plate, roof rails, body cladding, LED taillamps, sporty rear bumper, chrome belt running under the window frame, sloping roofline for that coupe-SUV appearance, body-coloured ORVMs with turn indicators and more.

Specs

Interestingly, the Fronx comes with the popular 1.5-litre K Series petrol engine making a decent 103 hp and 137 Nm of peak power and torque. There are options of choosing between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. In India, it comes with either a 1.2-litre petrol or a 1.0-litre turbo petrol mill. The prices for the South African market start at R279,000 and go all the way up to R335,900. Because of the bigger powertrain, these prices are slightly higher than in India.
