The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class India launch will happen on 25th June 2013, based a report by Economic Times. The news was revealed by Mr. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz India during an interview.

The current generation of the E-Class was launched here in 2009, and was a huge change from the previous E-Class. Gone were the smooth design, round lights and pleasant-to-look-at design, it was replaced by sharp lines, bold character lines along the side of the car; overall the E-Class had got edgier. The sharp and smart design story continued inside too, the smooth flowing design of the old car had given way to angled design bits that made the interior look in sync with the times. It was a pretty good looking car inside out and continued to offer Mercedes-Benz’s legendary build-quality, ride comfort and luxury feeling.

It has been almost four years since the current car was launched here, the design of the car is still in sync with the times and is a good performer among its rivals, but Mercedes has decided to go ahead and give it a refresh. Actually, the refresh was first shown internationally in January 2013.

What are the changes? Well, look at it for a moment:

Comparison: Left: Mercedes-Benz W213, Right: Mercedes-Benz W212
The new E-Class (on the left) loses the split headlamps that were almost a signature of the E-Class since 1995, it instead gets a one piece dual-barrel headlamp with integrated LED daytime running lamps. The grille is more upright and the bumper design gets more aggresive.

At the side, the new E-Class gets bolder character lines which run along the door handles. It loses the kink above the rear wheel arch, which was another E-Class signature design element.

At the rear, the new E-Class gets new tail-lamps, which don’t look that exciting if you ask us. The bumper has been slightly revised and…. do tell us if you see any other changes.

So, it looks pretty different on the outside.

There are certain design changes on the inside too. The most notable of them being the silver or wood (depends on the variant) bar running along the dashboard that separating the upper and lower part of it. The steering wheel looks sportier, the air-con vents have been redesigned as well, the dials are new, the screen for the COMAND system is new… that’s about it in short. The E-Class could also get a parking assist system, which automatically parallel-parks when the system senses a spot big enough for the car.

We expect that the E-Class in India could be offered with two engine options – a 2-litre, four-cylinder, 184 BHP petrol and a 2.1-litre, four-cylinder,ย 204 BHP diesel – both of which will be mated to Mercedes’s Merc’s 7G-tronic automatic transmission. Mercedes could also bring the new 585 BHP(!), E63 AMG, wouldn’t that be awesome?

Mercedes-Benz is gunning for the luxury segment crown that is now in the hands of Audi, it launched the G63 AMG in February 2013, the GL-Class in May 2013ย and the new A-Class less than two weeks ago.ย  We will update you with more news as it comes in.
