Maruti Suzuki In-Plant Railway Siding Project

This project marks the first time a carmaker has established an in-plant railway siding project in India. Bahucharaji Rail Corporation Limited (BRCL), a special-purpose vehicle created with the involvement of Gujarat Railway Infrastructure Development Corporation (GRIDE), Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), and MSIL, undertook the project. Their equities stand at 49%, 29%, and 26%, respectively. As per this project, Maruti will increase the use of railways to dispatch finished cars from 26% to 40% annually. This will result in saving 50,000 truck trips, 35 million litres of fuel and cutting down 1,650 tonnes of carbon emissions in a year.

With such promising aspects, the company will take a huge leap forward in reducing its carbon footprint which is a huge achievement in the grand scheme of things. This railway siding can dispatch 300,000 cars every year and has a parking capacity of 800 cars. Note that this number can be expanded to 3,000 cars. To put things into perspective, Maruti Suzuki has already transported around 18 lakh cars by railway until now. This move will increase that number even more. Finally, shifting to railways will help alleviate traffic congestion across the country.
