Upcoming VW Compact SUV Spotted Testing

The upcoming VW compact SUV has been seen testing on Indian roads for the first time ever. This project was, sort of, under wraps for a long time. But Skoda recently announced its compact SUV as well. We initially thought that Skoda would go solo on it. But it looks like the Volkswagen counterpart might be on the cards. While nothing is certain yet, we can deduce some details from the test mule spotted plying on our roads. Here are the details.

This video comes from bunnypunia on Instagram. The visuals capture the VW SUV under heavy camouflage. Still, the LED taillamps around the edges of the bootlid are visible. Moreover, the high-mount stop light is evident too. Look closely and you would also be able to decipher the compact roof rails which suggest that it is an SUV. More details are not available. Still, this is the first time we have witnessed it. With more such spy videos, things will get clearer.

While there are no official announcements from the German carmaker, we can make some educated guesses. Firstly, since it is a compact SUV, it will measure under 4 m. This will help VW price it competitively due to lower taxes on cars under 4 m in length in India. Another tax benefit can be applied if the engine of the car is smaller than 1.2-litre. VW Group already has the 1.0-litre TSI 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine in its portfolio which also powers the Taigun. Hence, we can expect the compact SUV to come with that mill. It generates 115 hp and 178 Nm of peak power and torque. This engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

Author’s Note

The heavily localised MQB A0 IN platform will ensure low maintenance, spare parts and servicing costs. That has traditionally been the area of concern for the German car marque. Its cars were extremely expensive to repair. That is why, under its India 2.0 strategy, they introduced this platform specifically for our market. Hence, the ownership costs are much lower among its existing models in comparison to the previous generation cars. Let us keep an eye out for more details in this case.
