NGT Bans 3 Vehicles of PM Modi’s Convoy – Here’s Why

NGT Bans PM Modi's Vehicles

NGT Bans PM Modi's Vehicles

In a shocking occurrence, the NGT (National Green Tribunal) bans PM Modi’s 3 security vehicles due to failing to comply with the latest emission norms. Note that NGT has banned all diesel cars older than 10 years in Delhi. Even petrol vehicles, older than 15 years, can’t be used in Delhi anymore. This decision comes in the wake of increasing pollution in the capital reaching almost toxic levels quite frequently. Vehicular emission is a major contributor to that issue. Hence, this policy came into effect back in 2015. PM Modi’s carcade consists of 3 Renault MD-5 diesel security SUVs which have BS3 certification.

Since we are currently in the BS6 Phase 2, the emission norms are very stringent. Diesel cars older than 10 years are not able to comply with the exhaust gas requirements. As a result, NGT has levied this ban in the capital. Interestingly, PM Modi’s convoy features three security SUVs which fall into this category. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is responsible for the security of PM Modi. They decide which cars to use and what protocols to follow to ensure the maximum safety and security for the PM.

This body urged NGT to give relaxation to these vehicles since they are barely used, used only for security activities and are not common to buy again. In fact, in the last 9 years, each of these vehicles has only been driven for less than 15,000 km. These were manufactured in 2013 and registered in Delhi on December 24, 2014. But replying to the request by SPG, NGT said, “The said vehicles being BS3 diesel vehicles, no relaxation can be granted with regard to either their registration or extension of their registration.” This makes it clear that NGT is rigid in its decision to not even spare the PM of the country.

Author’s Note

We feel there are two sides to this story. On one hand, NGT is doing its job diligently, ensuring that everyone is equal before the law. In order to curb pollution, strict measures are needed to be taken. Hence, no one should be spared. On the other hand, this is a matter of national security. Sourcing these cars is not easy. On top of that, they will cost a fortune which will be paid from the taxpayers’ pockets. Since these vehicles are not used for regular commutes, it also makes sense to exempt them from environmental laws. Still, we respect the decision of the NGT.
