It is fascinating to witness vehicles in real-life accidents to assess their performance in undesirable situations
The latest Maruti Swift crash brings forward a rather unusual occurrence. We know that Swift is among the most successful models sold in India since time immemorial. The Indo-Japanese car marque has kept updating it from time to time to ensure that its demand remains high. As a result, it consistently features among the top 5 highest-selling cars in the country even today, after over 21 years since it first entered the market. Traditionally, it has not done well in NCAP crash test safety ratings. Still, real-life situations capture distinct circumstances to demonstrate a car’s strength.
Latest Maruti Swift Crash Defies NCAP
The latest post doing rounds on the internet showcases the Maruti Swift on the road with what appears to be a mid-size pickup truck on top of it. The exact details of how it landed there elude us at the moment. Nevertheless, the video clearly shows that the truck is positioned on the roof of the hatchback. Still, there is no massive damage to the body shell of the Swift. In fact, apart from a dent in the roof, there appears to be no major deformation to the structure. That is pretty impressive and the internet users are engaged in the comment section with their varying opinions.
Some people are saying that this doesn’t automatically reflect high safety ratings since real-life situations can be so unique, while the set crash test procedure is specifically designed to test the particular parts of a vehicle. Others say that the fact that the Swift has been able to tolerate the load of the truck without getting severely damaged must be appreciated. We would like to mention here that one must not jump to conclusions based on isolated incidents. There is so much more to judging the build quality of a car than a simple video. Hence, such videos are great for entertainment purposes, but we must do our own research about the safety ratings and actual strength of a car.
Editor’s Note
The latest Maruti Swift crash is an interesting example of how real-world accidents can sometimes produce unexpected outcomes. Seeing a pickup truck resting on the roof of the hatchback without any immediately visible major structural deformation is certainly surprising, especially considering the Swift’s mixed history with global NCAP safety ratings. However, I would be cautious about interpreting this incident as proof of the car’s overall structural strength. Crash-test ratings are based on controlled and repeatable procedures that assess specific aspects of occupant protection, whereas real-world accidents involve countless variables. While such videos are useful for understanding how vehicles can behave in unusual situations, they should not be treated as a substitute for independent crash-test results and comprehensive safety assessments. – Yatharth Chauhan, Managing Editor
