Old Toyota Fortuner Converted to Next-Gen Model Karol Bagh

The Toyota Fortuner continues to enjoy cult status in India. Even after nearly a decade on sale in its current generation, the Fortuner remains one of the most desirable full-size SUVs in the country. However, with the next-generation Toyota Fortuner still some distance away from its official debut, some people have decided not to wait. The result is a custom-built Fortuner that looks remarkably close to Toyota’s upcoming generation SUV.

Images of the extensively modified vehicle have surfaced online, showcasing a transformation so comprehensive that many enthusiasts could easily mistake it for an entirely new model. For Indian SUV lovers, this project highlights just how far the modification industry has evolved.

Old Toyota Fortuner Receives Complete New-Generation Transformation

Most aftermarket modifications are limited to cosmetic upgrades such as alloy wheels, body kits, or lighting enhancements. This project goes much further as a car customiser in Karol Bagh, Delhi, has transformed an older-generation Toyota Fortuner to closely resemble the upcoming Fortuner expected to arrive globally in the coming years. At first glance, the SUV appears substantially newer than the donor vehicle. The transformation includes:

  • Completely redesigned front fascia
  • New grille assembly
  • Updated LED headlamp setup
  • Redesigned bumper
  • New bonnet treatment
  • Updated alloy wheels
  • Revised rear styling elements

The execution appears surprisingly clean, which explains why the modified SUV is attracting attention across social media platforms.

Fortuner’s Road Presence Gets a Major Upgrade

One reason behind the Fortuner’s enduring popularity is its commanding road presence. This modified example takes that characteristic several steps further. The front end now features styling cues inspired by Toyota’s latest global SUV lineup. The sharper lighting elements, larger grille and more aggressive bumper treatment make the vehicle look significantly more contemporary.

Compared to the standard older-generation Fortuner, the modified SUV appears wider, more muscular, and considerably more premium. For buyers who love the Fortuner’s imposing stance but feel the design is beginning to show its age, such conversions can be tempting.

Toyota Fortuner Remains a Favourite Among Modifiers

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an extensive Fortuner modification project. Over the years, Indian customisation houses have transformed Fortuners into:

  • Lexus-inspired SUVs
  • Land Cruiser lookalikes
  • Legender-inspired models
  • TRD-style off-road builds

The Fortuner’s body-on-frame construction and strong aftermarket support make it an ideal platform for such projects. Owners often spend several lakh rupees upgrading their SUVs instead of purchasing a newer vehicle. In many cases, these modifications cost only a fraction of what upgrading to a new Fortuner would require.

What We Know About the Upcoming Toyota Fortuner

The popularity of projects like this also reflects growing anticipation surrounding the next-generation Toyota Fortuner. While Toyota has not officially revealed the new model, reports suggest the SUV could undergo one of its biggest transformations yet.

Expected upgrades include:

Larger TouchscreenYes
Digital Instrument ClusterYes

Panoramic SunroofPossible
Improved Safety PackageYes
Hybrid TechnologyPossible

The next-generation model is also expected to adopt Toyota’s latest global architecture, bringing improvements in ride quality, refinement and efficiency.

Engine and Performance Expectations

Although official details remain under wraps, Toyota is expected to continue offering diesel powertrains due to strong demand in markets such as India.

Toyota may also explore electrified powertrain solutions as emission norms become increasingly stringent worldwide.

Is Converting an Old Fortuner Worth It?

This is perhaps the biggest question arising from such projects The answer depends largely on the owner’s priorities.

A conversion offers both Pros and Cons:

Pros

  • Fresh modern appearance
  • Lower cost than buying a new SUV
  • Unique road presence
  • Personalisation opportunities

Cons

  • Potential insurance complications
  • Variable build quality
  • Resale value concerns
  • Possible legal compliance issues

Owners considering similar projects should ensure all modifications comply with local regulations and are carried out by reputable workshops.

Editor’s Note

In my 15+ years of covering the Indian automotive market, I’ve seen countless modified vehicles. However, very few manage to strike the right balance between ambition and execution. This Fortuner conversion succeeds because it doesn’t look overly flashy or forced. The design remains consistent with Toyota’s global styling direction, making the SUV appear genuinely newer rather than merely modified. Would I recommend spending several lakh rupees converting an old Fortuner into a next-generation lookalike?

For most buyers, probably not. The better financial decision is often to continue using the vehicle as intended and wait for the actual next-generation model. However, for enthusiasts who want something unique and already own an older Fortuner in good condition, projects like this demonstrate what’s possible. More importantly, the attention this build is receiving highlights one undeniable fact: Indian buyers remain incredibly excited about the future of the Toyota Fortuner. And if this modified example is anything to go by, expectations for the next-generation SUV are sky-high.
