Tata Tiago NCAP Crash Test

In this post, we will discuss the Tata Tiago safety rating details. Tiago is a popular hatchback which has secured an impressive 4-star safety rating at the Global NCAP back in 2020. Note that this was before the Global NCAP testing was updated. In its current form, the regulations have become much more stringent. Hence, it is possible that this rating might not be valid anymore. In any case, we know that the Tiago has not been updated thoroughly by Tata Motors in the last few years. Therefore, we can dive deep into the specifics of the safety ratings it secured the last time around.

Tata Tiago Safety Rating in NCAP Crash Test

As mentioned previously, Tata Tiago was tested by the Global NCAP back in 2020. It had two airbags and ABS as standard. In the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, it was able to bring home a decent 12.52 points out of a possible 17. This warrants a 4-star safety rating as per the NCAP calculations. On the other hand, it bagged 34.15 points out of 49 in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) section. This translates to a 3-star safety rating. Hence, the Tiago scored good ratings in both categories which is quite uncommon in this segment of vehicles. In fact, it was the highest safety-rated vehicle in this category.

Tata Tiago Safety Rating – Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)

Note that the crash tests include a full frontal impact test, an offset frontal impact test and a side pole impact test. These take place at 64 km/h, 50 km/h and 29 km/h, respectively. In the AOP section, the driver and passenger’s heads and necks received good protection. However, the driver’s chest demonstrated marginal protection, while the passenger’s chest showed adequate protection. Both the driver’s and passenger’s knees displayed marginal protection as they impacted dangerous structures behind the facia. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings. Similarly, the footwell area was rated as unstable. As standard, the vehicle had a Seatbelt Reminder for driver and passenger and ABS. All these factors culminated in the Tata Tiago being a 4-star safety-rated vehicle.

Child Occupant Protection (COP)

In the COP section, the Tiago was put through similar tests as in the AOP segment. However, in the COP category, an 18-month-old and 3-year-old child dummy were placed in the rear seat of the vehicle. The impact of the crash on these dummies was recorded. The seat for the 3-year-old was installed forward facing which was able to prevent excessive forward movement at the time of the impact. The 18-month-old child dummy was installed using the adult belt facing rearward.

The protection for the 18-month-old dummy was good. The recommended Child Restraint System did not show incompatibility. Unfortunately, the vehicle didn’t offer a three-point seatbelt in all seating positions and there were no ISOFIX child seat anchorages either. Finally, the car does not offer the possibility of disconnecting the passenger airbag in case a rearward-facing CRS needs to be installed in the front passenger seat. All these factors contributed to a 3-star safety rating. Hence, the Tata Tiago emerged as one of the safest vehicles among its rivals. In fact, I believe that is a huge reason for its immense popularity.

Tata Tiago Safety Features

Now, I must mention that Tata Tiago is a budget hatchback. In fact, it is the most affordable product in Tata Motors’ India lineup. Nevertheless, the Indian auto giant ensures that there is no compromise in terms of build quality and safety features. Let us glance at the top safety amenities on offer with Tata Tiago here.

  • 2 Airbags
  • ABS

Our View

The Tata Tiago safety rating analysis is crucial to determine what the newest model in the lineup can achieve at the latest Bharat NCAP test. Note that all the new vehicles are now being tested at the indigenous Bharat NCAP test. It is based on the updated Global NCAP procedure. Hence, vehicles securing high scores will indicate that these cars fulfil the latest conditions. That is what makes me wonder if the Tata Tiago can score a similar rating if it is tested today. Since there are no major changes to the chassis, body or safety equipment in the latest model and the testing procedure has become even more stringent, it become difficult to replicate the performance it demonstrated at the Global NCAP back in 2020.

Still, I am excited to know the exact details of how well it performs at the Bharat NCAP test in the coming time. Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that there is no substitute for safe driving. Irrespective of the safety ratings of a car, you must make sure that you drive according to the traffic regulations. If things go south, the safety ratings might not be of much help. Let us pledge to be responsible drivers and ensure that we follow the road safety guidelines vehemently.
