The Manesar manufacturing plant of Maruti Suzuki has commenced the operation of India’s largest automobile in-plant railway siding. This is the company’s second GatiShakti in-plant terminal after the Gujarat plant. The aim is to bring efficiency in logistics and sustainable development. In a major boost to green logistics and infrastructure, India’s largest in-plant railway siding has been inaugurated at Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s (MSIL) Manesar facility. The event was led by Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini. This new railway siding is part of the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC). The 126-kilometre corridor connects Sonipat to Palwal in Haryana. The project is registered under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. It is being developed by Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Ltd (HORCL), a joint venture between the government and private stakeholders.

Maruti Suzuki is a key investor in the project. The company has committed Rs 325 crore to develop the HORC. It has also spent Rs 127 crore on building the internal railway yard at Manesar. In total, MSIL has invested Rs 452 crore in this railway infrastructure. Spread across 46 acres inside the Manesar plant, the railway siding includes a fully electrified track system. It has four full-length tracks for rakes and one for engine escape, with a total track length of 8.2 kilometres. The facility also includes a two-floor station building, a separate path for train guards and drivers, and a modern electronic interlocking system.

Cars made at Maruti’s Manesar and Gurugram plants will be shipped from this siding to 17 logistics hubs, reaching over 380 cities across India. It will also serve ports like Mundra and Pipavav for exporting vehicles. When operating at full capacity, the siding will be able to dispatch 4.5 lakh cars annually. Since 2014-15, MSIL has transported 25 lakh vehicles through railways. The company’s shift to rail transport supports its green logistics goals. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13, focused on climate action. With this development, Maruti Suzuki is moving closer to its vision of a cleaner and more sustainable future.
