Tata Motors is planning to bring back the Sierra moniker in a modern avatar to attract new buyers
The new Tata Sierra was spotted road testing with heavy camouflage. Sierra remains the most anticipated SUV from the renowned Indian automotive giant. It was unveiled in a near-production avatar at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, held in New Delhi this January. In a bid to rival Mahindra’s new-age electric SUVs, Tata is gearing up to introduce fresh, ground-up electric vehicles. Currently, Tata holds the top spot as India’s leading EV manufacturer. However, a majority of its EV sales stem from models initially designed as petrol or diesel cars and later converted to electric. For now, let’s explore the details of this upcoming electric SUV.
New Tata Sierra Spied Testing
We were able to glance at the specifics of this latest spotting courtesy of fanmade3d on YouTube. The visuals capture the new SUV amidst heavy traffic. Reportedly, this is somewhere in Pune, Maharashtra. The thickly wrapped SUV is seen to be emerging from underneath an overhead bridge. As it merges into the traffic, we are able to witness its front fascia. The first thing I notice in the video is the connected LED strip, which runs the width of the fascia. Lower down, we see the headlamps and a sporty bumper.
This design philosophy is something we have seen on many modern Tata cars. On the sides, the SUV bears a bulky, boxy silhouette, accentuating its imposing road presence. Also, the alloy wheels and prominent wheel arches lend it a butch look. This is in line with what we saw at the Auto Expo 2025. Therefore, I don’t expect the production model to be all that different from the one shown at the Auto Expo. That is not necessarily a bad thing since it garnered a lot of traction from visitors and experts alike.
My View
Although not officially confirmed, Tata Motors is likely to introduce the electric version of the Tata Sierra first, possibly by the end of this year. The ICE variant is expected to arrive afterwards. Information about the technical specifications remains limited at this point. Still, the ICE version is anticipated to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engine. Buyers will likely have the choice between manual and automatic transmission options. Let’s wait and watch how the developments unfold in the coming months.
