Ever since the E20 fuel became mainstream, many car owners have been wondering about its impact on fuel efficiency
A rather interesting case has emerged, where the host tests the real-world mileage of the Kia Clavis, having E20 fuel with and without additives. In recent times, there has been a lot of buzz around the E20 fuel in India. The government briefly considered mandating the sale of E20 fuel only, at the petrol pumps. However, due to a huge backlash from the public, it had to take that decision back. Nevertheless, there are loads of questions in the minds of car owners regarding how this fuel affects their cars.
E20-Compatible Kia Clavis Mileage Test With and Without Additives
This detailed video comes to us courtesy of V3Cars on YouTube. The host has the two Kia Clavis MPVs with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol mill and DCT gearbox, one with the additives and the other without. At the start of the video, he mentions that the team will perform two rounds – 100 km of city driving and 100 km of highway driving. At the beginning of each section, they will fill the fuel tank to the brim to enable the tank-to-tank method of testing fuel consumption. That is widely regarded as one of the best ways to get accurate readings. Oftentimes, the displays on the cars don’t exactly capture truly precise statistics.
The two drivers commence with the city run. After completing the circuit of around 100 km, they refilled the fuel tanks. They found out that the car with the fuel additives boasted a slightly higher mileage at 10.96 km/l in comparison to 10.41 km/l without the additives. On the other hand, the results changed during the highway testing procedure. The vehicle with fuel additives gave a mileage of 14.29 km/l, while the other car demonstrated 15.17 km/l. Hence, the additives are not exactly mileage boosters. Having said that, their main purpose is to enhance the life of the engine components. More importantly, the host also compared this performance with the Clavis without E20 fuel. The difference was around 10%, marking a significant drop in fuel efficiency.
My View
I believe this is a great and thorough test conducted by the host to cover the entire mileage scenario around E20 fuel. Firstly, the conclusion is evident that E20 fuel results in a decrease in fuel efficiency. Secondly, the use of fuel additives is primarily for the protection of engine components rather than boosting mileage. Any increase in mileage in city conditions is only minor. Therefore, this video will help car owners build a reasonable expectation while using the E20 fuel.

Having tracked the transition to E20 fuel closely, I can confidently say Indian consumers are right to scrutinize its real-world efficiency impact. This test reinforces what many early adopters have been reporting, a noticeable drop in mileage, especially on turbo-petrol setups like the Clavis. Additives may help protect engine components, but they aren’t magic mileage enhancers. As India pushes toward greener mobility, manufacturers must ensure that running costs don’t become a bigger concern for everyday buyers.
