MG Majestor Pulls 406-tonne Train on Rail

This feat has resulted in a Guinness World Record performance

In this post, we take a look at the details of the MG Majestor pulling a 406-tonne train on rail, creating a world record. Majestor is a prominent product in MG’s lineup as the off-road-focused model. MG offers feature-laden vehicles regardless of the segment it operates in. Therefore, the flagship ICE SUV certainly brings out the best that MG has on sale. Recently, the internet has been abuzz with the Majestor’s seemingly incredible feat of pulling a colossal train. However, it begs the question: Is that really such an impressive achievement? Well, let us find out.

MG Majestor Pulls 406-tonne Train on Rail

As per the official press release, the MG Majestor created a Guinness World Record for “Heaviest Train Pulled by a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Rail”. To be specific, the SUV successfully pulled a 406.4-tonne train over a distance of 300 feet on a secured railway section between Kakapora railway station and Awantipora railway station in Jammu and Kashmir. With this, it beat the previous benchmark of 400 tonnes and 100 feet. Therefore, the carmaker is proudly marketing it as a poignant achievement. However, let us understand the science behind this occurrence.

If any of you is a science student, you can easily understand this phenomenon by reading the concept of rolling resistance. The coefficient of rolling resistance of steel on steel is just 0.0020. This means that the actual equivalent weight the Majestor needs to pull is around 700 kg. That is not a big deal for any SUV, let alone a capable off-roader like the Majestor. In fact, based on the same principle, the Ford F-150 recently pulled an even heavier train. All this is part of their marketing strategies with the help of a physics hack. Having said that, the credit must be given for an innovative idea and appealing implementation for social media attention.

As someone who has tracked the evolution of the Indian SUV market closely, I see this more as a clever marketing exercise than a true benchmark of capability. While MG Motor deserves credit for grabbing attention, the science behind rolling resistance makes this feat far less extraordinary than it appears at first glance. In a market like ours, where buyers are becoming increasingly informed, such stunts may spark curiosity but won’t necessarily influence purchase decisions. Ultimately, real-world performance, reliability, and after-sales experience continue to matter far more than headline-grabbing records.
