BMW has launched the M440i Convertible in India at ₹1.09 crore (ex-showroom), bringing back the open-top driving experience to the luxury performance space. This new model sits within BMW’s M Performance lineup and is aimed at buyers looking for a mix of performance and lifestyle appeal. Convertible cars have always been a niche in India, but BMW clearly believes there is still demand for something that offers both driving excitement and that unmistakable “top-down” experience. The M440i Convertible essentially builds on the formula of the M340i, but adds a layer of style and drama.
BMW M440i Performance and Mechanical Highlights
At the heart of the M440i Convertible is BMW’s well-known 3.0-litre, straight-six turbo-petrol engine. This is the same unit seen in the M340i, and it produces 374 hp and 500 Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox and AWD system, ensuring strong traction and performance across conditions.
BMW claims a 0-100 kmph time of 4.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph. Interestingly, real-world testing has shown that the car can actually be quicker than claimed, highlighting just how potent this powertrain is. What makes this car special, though, isn’t just straight-line speed. It’s the combination of performance and usability. Despite being a convertible, the M440i retains the core driving characteristics of a performance sedan, offering both comfort and sharpness depending on how you drive it.

Design, Positioning and What It Offers
The biggest highlight here is, of course, the convertible soft-top roof. It transforms the driving experience entirely, allowing you to switch between a coupe-like feel and open-air motoring. The M440i Convertible is positioned as a four-seater luxury drop-top, making it more usable than typical two-seater convertibles. However, like most cars in this segment, practicality takes a slight hit due to the roof mechanism.

In terms of market positioning, the BMW goes up against the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, which is priced slightly higher at ₹1.16 crore. This makes the M440i a relatively more accessible option in this niche segment, while still offering strong performance credentials. At its core, this car is less about practicality and more about experience. It’s for buyers who want something different; something that stands out every time you drive it.

The BMW M440i Convertible is not a car you buy with your head, it’s one you buy with your heart. It takes the already impressive M340i formula and adds a layer of emotion through its open-top design. You still get the same powerful engine, strong performance, and everyday usability, but now with an added sense of occasion. Yes, it’s a niche product. Yes, practicality isn’t its strongest suit. But that’s not the point. If you’re someone who values driving experience, performance, and the joy of open-air motoring, the M440i Convertible delivers exactly that while still being surprisingly usable for everyday conditions. In a market dominated by SUVs and practicality-focused cars, this feels like a refreshing change.
