LML Chetak Retrofit EVs

LML Chetak Retrofit EVs

In this EV age, retrofitting has emerged as a decent and affordable solution to convert your existing ICE vehicles into electric ones

You now have the opportunity to convert your old Bajaj Chetak and LML-like scooters into EVs using a retrofit kit. The last few years have been immensely conducive for the EV industry, particularly in India. This is true not just for the four-wheeler passenger vehicle market, but for the two-wheeler segment as well. While the market is flooded with new players and old players with new electric models, the retrofitting industry is also expanding. This post talks about one such instance of how one can convert their old scooters into an electric one.

Retrofit Your Chetak and LML Scooters To Become EVs

This post stems from surajkashyap4u on Instagram. The host is at the showroom of RCJ. It is a company which designs and manufactures electric scooters with an old-school charm. Looking at these instantly reminds me of the Bajaj Chetaks and LMLs of the past. These have a basic and functional design and simple components. This means that the company is prioritizing functionality and affordability over everything else. Therefore, in an age of flashy elements and large screens, these RCJ electric scooters are a breath of fresh air.

Delving into the specification, these scooters are built for city commutes with a range of around 60-80 km on a single charge. The top speed is rated at 40 km/h from a hub-mounted BLDC motor, generating 250 W. Powering the electric motor is a 1.54 kWh and a 2.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Using a portable charger, the charging takes 3 hours. Furthermore, the EV has hydraulic dampers for suspension at both ends and drum brakes to take care of braking. However, the most enticing aspect of these scooters is the price tag of Rs 70,000. That makes it a great option for all those who want to experience an electric scooter at an attractive price.

Having observed the rapid growth of the EV industry in India, I believe retrofitting could become an important parallel ecosystem alongside brand-new electric vehicles. For many buyers, especially in smaller cities and towns, converting an existing scooter into an EV makes far more financial sense than purchasing a completely new model. What stands out to me is the practicality of such solutions, particularly when combined with the nostalgic appeal of iconic scooters like the Chetak and LML. In my view, if regulations and reliability standards evolve properly, retrofitting could play a meaningful role in accelerating EV adoption in India.
