Mitsubishi Pajero Next Generation vs Pajero SFX India-Spec

Mitsubishi Pajero Is Finally Coming Back. Should Indian SUV Fans Get Excited?

For years, the Mitsubishi Pajero has existed mostly in memories. If you grew up watching SUVs dominate Indian highways in the 2000s, chances are the Pajero was right at the top of your wish list. Now, Mitsubishi has officially confirmed that an all-new Pajero will make its global debut in Autumn 2026. More importantly, it won’t be a soft crossover pretending to be an SUV. It will be a proper ladder-frame off-roader based on the Triton pickup truck platform and positioned as Mitsubishi’s flagship SUV.

The big question for Indian enthusiasts is obvious: Will the new Mitsubishi Pajero come to India? Well, the answer is complicated.

New Mitsubishi Pajero: What Do We Know So Far?

Mitsubishi has confirmed that the upcoming Pajero will sit on the same underpinnings as the latest Triton pickup truck.

That means buyers can expect:

  • Ladder-frame chassis
  • Proper 4WD hardware
  • Serious off-road capability
  • Improved towing capacity
  • Modern electronics and driver assistance systems

The original Pajero built its reputation by dominating the Dakar Rally and tackling some of the toughest terrain on the planet. Mitsubishi appears keen to revive that rugged image with the new-generation model. While full specifications remain under wraps, the SUV is expected to feature diesel and electrified powertrain options depending on market requirements.

Why The New Pajero Makes Sense For India

In my years of tracking the Indian automotive industry, one thing has remained remarkably consisten – Indians love rugged SUVs. Despite prices touching premium territory, the Toyota Fortuner continues to enjoy extraordinary demand. Buyers willingly spend upwards of โ‚น50 lakh because they value reliability, road presence, durability and off-road credibility.

The Pajero checks all those boxes. The brand may have disappeared from mainstream conversations, but the name still carries immense respect among enthusiasts. Even today, many owners consider the old Pajero and Pajero Sport among the most dependable long-distance SUVs ever sold in India. That’s exactly why the new Pajero could find buyers if Mitsubishi decides to return.

So Why Isn’t An India Launch Guaranteed?

This is where things get tricky.

Mitsubishi Has No Real Passenger Vehicle Presence In India

Unlike Toyota, Hyundai or Mahindra, Mitsubishi lacks a meaningful passenger vehicle ecosystem in India.

Launching a premium SUV requires:

  • Dealer network
  • Service infrastructure
  • Spare parts support
  • Brand marketing investments

Building all of that from scratch is expensive.

Pricing Could Become A Major Challenge

If Mitsubishi imports the Pajero as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) or even assembles it through limited CKD operations, pricing would become a serious concern.

Based on current taxation structures, we estimate a potential price range of:

Variant TypeEstimated Price
CKD Assemblyโ‚น55-65 Lakh
CBU Importโ‚น65-75 Lakh+

At those prices, the Pajero would enter territory occupied by:

  • Toyota Fortuner
  • MG Majestor
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee

That is a difficult battle for a returning brand.

What Could Mitsubishi’s India Strategy Look Like?

The most realistic scenario appears to be:

Phase 1

Global launch in late 2026.

Phase 2

Focus on key markets such as:

  • Australia
  • ASEAN countries
  • Middle East
  • South Africa

Phase 3

Evaluate India comeback possibilities around 2028-2030.

If Mitsubishi does re-enter India, the Pajero would serve as a halo product that rebuilds brand credibility. Interestingly, we believe an all-new Pajero Sport positioned directly against the lower variants of the Toyota Fortuner might actually have a stronger business case than the flagship Pajero itself.

Expected Rivals Of The New Mitsubishi Pajero

If launched in India, the Pajero would face some formidable competition.

SUVExpected Price
Toyota Fortunerโ‚น34.76-50.46 Lakh
MG Glosterโ‚น38.33-43.16 Lakh
Jeep Grand Cherokee โ‚น63 Lakh
MG Majestorโ‚น40.99-44.99 Lakh

The Fortuner remains the benchmark because of its unmatched resale value, reliability and nationwide service network. Clearly, Mitsubishi would need something truly special to disrupt that dominance.

Editor’s Note

The return of the Pajero is one of the biggest SUV stories of 2026. For enthusiasts, this announcement is significant because Mitsubishi isn’t bringing back the name on a crossover. It’s returning as a proper body-on-frame SUV with genuine off-road credentials.

That said, I wouldn’t expect an India launch anytime soon. The business challenges are simply too large right now. Mitsubishi first needs a roadmap for rebuilding its presence in the country before introducing a premium flagship SUV. If you ask me, the real opportunity lies in a next-generation Pajero Sport. Price it close to the Toyota Fortuner, back it with a solid dealer network, and Mitsubishi could once again become relevant in India’s premium SUV segment.

Until then, the new Pajero remains an exciting global launch that Indian enthusiasts should keep a close eye on. Because if Mitsubishi ever decides to make a comeback, this iconic SUV will almost certainly lead the charge.
